I've already stated I'd love to see Jason Dunstall approached by the club. Let's say the selection panel has three members, what type of people should that group consist? Without putting too much thought into it, I reckon a former coach, a former admin and a former player. Dunstall's strengths are his playing legacy and the largely behind the scenes efforts he put in at the Hawks, including his interim CEO role when the club was a basket case. He's considered to have played a major role in setting up the Hawthorn team and culture we know today. So, Vote 1 for Bung! A former coach? It would be good to have someone with relatively contemporary experience, someone like Mark Williams for example. Trouble is a lot of suitable candidates, including Choco of course, are linked with other clubs. That leaves us with retired types such as Parko or Wallsy. Or maybe Lethal. But this is where it gets tough, some of these guys are out of touch, I think. I think Walls might be the best option there, happy to hear more. At least Walls understands Carlton without being blinded by our past. A former player? The obvious choice is to go for a player with premiership experience. Raid the recently retired Geelong list, or perhaps the Swans. Two clubs recognised to have good culture. A Joel Corey or Brad Ottens type (is Cameron Ling too cliche?). Or perhaps a Jared Crouch or Jude Bolton. These are guys that weren't so flashy, but had true grit. In order to spread the scope a bit wider I've ignored the likes of Brad Sewell or Brent Guerra because of my preference for Dunstall. Best to gain the experience of as many clubs as possible. So maybe it's also worth considering players from struggling clubs who've almost made it. Okay that may sound dumb, but we should be seeking input from people who have gone through big rebuilds before. The Bulldogs, St Kilda and Freo are some examples of what I mean. Brad Johnson/Rohan Smith, Lenny Hayes, Paul Hasleby/Peter Bell. Hmm, dunno, just could be worth a tought. So, to pick some names from what I've said above, would the selection panel below be a good way to go? Jason Dunstall Robert Walls Joel Corey (assistant with the Bulldogs) Jude Bolton |

I would not have thought a guy who is so obviously very much a part of a rival is a good choice. The AFL biz in Melb is cut throat, he may well steer us down the wrong path. May as well get Eddie to pick our next Prez. Yes, he'd probably recognize the right one, but it doesn't mean he'd recommend them. |

AFL coaching today is as much about man management than anything else. One of the selection committee should be an expert in this area. |

Walls was on a committee which selected Lyon to coach St Kilda over much higher profiled and favoured candidates. we shouldn't be blinkered in our approach to this. We need the best people to make the call, not the best Carlton people. |

Brendan Fevola, Ryan Houlihan, and Matthew Lappin. And then, if things get too heated, I believe they have a fire extinguisher handy! |

Dunstall barracked for Carlton as a kid, therefore you would think there would be less chance of him shafting us in the process. |

AFAIK Dunstall has no longer has an official role with Hawthorn. Seeking people from the outside is exactly what we should be doing. I trust that someone like Dunstall would have the right character to fill the role with the honesty and integrity required. |

We need the best people to make the call, not the best Carlton people. Walls worked for a lot of clubs, but he was never CEO and intimately involved in the success of a club from a business sense. Dunstall recognizes that every year the Hawks are at the top and we are at the bottom is more kids wearing Hawks jumpers. Kids drive memberships because parents look for things to do with the kids. It's a fight for life in Melb now and I would be very cautious in appointing a guy who doesn't have skin in the game or is 100% committed to making sure we get the right person. Independence is one thing, but there's also a risk if the selection panel is made up of people who may consider themselves aloof from the consequences. |

No dinosaurs please. The game is moving so quickly that we need to find the next innovator rather than relying on someone who has done it all before. |
