To be played at the QE Oval in Bendigo - capacity of 18,000 - so expect it to be another sold out crowd.

Carlton coach Mick Malthouse returns to work after missing NAB Challenge opener to be with ill wife

Quote:
It’s understood the surgery was a success and Nanette is recovering well, paving the way for Malthouse to return to Princes Park this week.

But club officials will support him if he needs more time away from the side.

...

The Blues have already stated it will be a very different Blues line-up that takes on Collingwood in Bendigo on March 15.

Senior players Dale Thomas, Chris Judd, Bryce Gibbs, Robbie Warnock, Lachie Henderson and Michael Jamison are all scheduled to play their first competitive games of the year.

Skipper Marc Murphy remains a 50-50 proposition after straining a calf.

I personally doubt Warnock will get the nod, but there will be plenty who will miss out, and I'm wondering if we'll have another intra-club to sort things out between now and then. Another outlet for the developing types and injury returns will be the VFL practice matches, of which there will be two between now and this match.

If it were a 6-8 day gap between this and the West Coast game, you'd rest Armfield, Curnow, Byrne, Tutt and Casboult, but they'll have well and truly recovered without further match play.

Here's the current run down:

Injuries: Murphy (calf), Ellard (calf), Giles (foot), Kreuzer (foot), Walker (knee)

Set to resume: Whiley (VFL), Foster (VFL), Holman (VFL), Menzel (AFL)

Set to play VFL: Warnock, Walsh, Russell, Viojo-Rainbow, Fields, Holman, Johnson, Gowers, Tutt, Byrne

Warnock deserves to be banished to a VFL start, while the rest either showed last week through non-appearance or limited/poor performance that they need to make way for senior players, as well as gain the opportunity that comes with 70+ minutes on the field at VFL level.

After that, you're left with 29 names, so the squad picks itself.

FB: Jaksch Jamison Tuohy
HB: Yarran Rowe Docherty
CC: Gibbs Carrazzo Simpson
HF: Thomas Henderson Boekhorst
FF: Menzel Watson Buckley

RR: Wood Cripps Judd

Int from (3 to miss): Bell, White, Jones, Casboult, Everitt, Graham, Curnow, Sheehan, Armfield, Smith, Dick

Graham, Dick, Armfield, Smith, Boekhorst and Sheehan are the obvious names in the mix to miss on merit, and I'm of the opinion we'll only have 2 emergencies make the trip in favour of ensuring the remainder get game time in the VFL, assuming it's not a scorcher.

Things are warming up with inclusion of Hendo and Jamo in the spine.
Gibbs Thomas Judd Carrazzo in the midfield is a brand new midfield on last game's lot.
Menzel and Everitt are the icing. Our best 22 is taking shape.

I guess the icing would be Kreuzer Murphy Walker
It's about normal to have a couple stars out anyway so the performance against our old foe counts for the fans. The Pies are playing frenzied footy like they were in 2010. It's not going to be easy, and I don't expect our stars to be risking injury from big hits.

The game also counts a lot for Borkhurst Buckley and Tutt if he plays.
I hope Warnock is given every chance to prove himself in the next couple games....or write him till later part of the season when he completes his preseason.

It is strange that people seem to prefer Watson to Casboult. Casboult had a break out season last year and admittedly he has a long way to go, I would have thought he is far in advance of Watson who has failed to impress except for 1 game at the end of the year and 1 intraclub match.

Would be awesome if we gave Boek, DVR and Clem another run. Expect only Blaine and Clem to get a run, Clem as sub.

Watching the Eagles game again and Johnson was pretty good up forward, looked like he does in the VFL with good pressure and smart running.

Jaksch's follow up performance is another to watch for. Still around 2 weeks from game day though, not sure how many times I can watch replays of a loss, albeit a NAB Challenge loss.

Would be disappointed if we showed them our plan.
Round 4 is where it's at, just like against our Round 2 opponent was last week.
Game plan will be: 1 handball and 1 long kick. No if's but's or maybe's.
In Madhouse we trust.

Go watch the NB intraclub on Friday?

I'd rather these three than senior players. Pies will also have some youngsters in and it would be good to see if ours can match it with them.

This is one of 2 remaining pre-season games before the season starts.

Coming around all too soon for my liking, would prefer to leave it a couple more weeks before we have this game..no need to rush

The 'Get The Ball and Bomb It' Game Plan

Highly original. We will fool everyone with its simplicity.

Viva the Madhouse.

I'm pretty sure we'll win this game by 49 points.

I think Johnson is worth more of look.
Despite his frame he does well and I remember him coming on against St Kilda (IRC) in the last quarter last year and doing well. Not quite sure what sort of player he could be - as in it is easy to see how good Casbolt could be if he gets it together - not sure how much more upside johnson has...

He makes a good contest but he's not got enough toe for AFL level it would seem.

Needs to show more in the VFL now that we have more HF options.
