A loss of $1.6m is poor.

Interesting to see changes to the constitution being proposed.
What is the purpose of this proposed 'Independent Nominations Committee' ??

Most of it is gaming revenue and the lower gate receipts.

Our operating expenses have also been ridiculous in the Malthouse era... how many contracts are we paying out?

Probably ratten, but he would not come under coaching expenses, that would be an insult to the coaching fraternity

Released on draft night?

Like governments dumping the bad news at 4pm on a Friday.

To wipe out this debt, the club should introduce a $7 levy to be paid by each member when they attend a game

Flawed game.

Adelaide rival Pies for highest attendances this year....lost $1.6m
Saints lose $3.9m
We lose $1.6m
Bombers covered off by donations and pokies (like others)

They're the ones I know off the top of my head.

Take out eagles, hawks, pies cats.....and there's just a heap of red ink.

The AFL technically runs as a non for profit organisation, due to distributing its revenue amongst the clubs and also running the game etc.

The clubs have no real shareholders to pay dividends to (kangaroos may be an exception).

The clubs basically try to spend what they earn. Good tax wise.

The Blues last financial year dragged in around 9 million from gaming revenue. I believe the pies have a gaming revenue base at least twice that level.

The afl and the clubs may well have corporate structures and are aggressive in their marketing and revenue chasing, but I see them as church groups and charity fund raising cults

You're stupidity knows no bounds.
Ratten has been gone for 2 years now. Not to mention, he would have been on a pittance compared to the current coaching regime.
You really need to get over it.

That doesn't change that operating expenses have grown to 50% higher than the levels of the previous regime. What are we dumping $17 million cash into now that we weren't 3 years ago?

Most likely due to cost of operating pokies

There's an expense column for gaming specifically.

So we still have to pay money for equalisation?

Carlton would still need to pay money for "equalisation".

http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/carlto ... 7138583712

"CARLTON has joined St Kilda and the Brisbane Lions in posting a worrying loss for the 2014 season.

The Blues were in the red to the tune of $1.6 million in 2014, having made a half-million dollar profit in 2013.

The result follows losses of more than $3.5 million each for competition strugglers St Kilda and the Brisbane Lions.

Carlton has about $6 million of debt."

So in terms of comparing Carlton's recent history to Brisbane and St Kilda - it is poorer.
Brisbane - 4 grand finals - 3 premierships
St Kilda - 2/3 grand finals - 0 premierships

Carlton - nowhere near a grand final

Carlton - over 6 million in debt - no AFL assistance
North - not in debt anymore - but still gets 2-3 million each year in extra AFL assistance
Brisbane - over 10 million in debt - gets AFL assistance
Port - will post a lost due to SANFL stuff up - still gets AFL assistance.

Why is one club's debt considered not important but three other clubs's debt is important?

From 2002-09
Western Bulldogs - plenty of AFL assistance - 10 million...and plenty of finals in this time.
North Melbourne -about 8 million in AFL assistance
Melbourne over 6 million in AFL assistance.
How much "special assistance" for Carlton during this time when they were on the bottom of the ladder..nearly broke?

Yeah that has actually been covered by you previously Tap, and it was already answered. Our debt levels are fine, our annual revenue is significantly higher. Don't use debt alone as an indicator of financial health.

I know Carlton has the potential to be a strong club. In my opinion, Carlton is the 2nd most supported club in the league after Collingwood. Carlton and Collingwood provided the greatest moment in VFL/AFL history (the 1970 g/f) so that plus other factors ensures that there is huge potential for the AFL to make a lot of money out of Carlton, yet every time the AFL set themselves up as Santa (only for certain clubs though) it distorts what should naturally happen.

The handouts are given in a random way that has no rationality. How North still qualifies for special dividends is beyond comprehension.
I would like to see how Carlton goes without figurativally speaking having one hand tied behind its back. That is all I ask for.
