EXPENSIVE altitude camps may be a thing of the past after Collingwood and Carlton abandoned overseas trip plans next pre-season.

But a week or two at altitude offers so much

Credit where it's due - but he's actually got a few. One of them is the goal posts. It'll happen...but like Arizona - the club has been relying on external money for these things. The financial situation would surprise many. There's a go-to list for different projects. Arizona and Qatar was largely funded by people on that list...pretty hard to put a name to an overseas trip...but there were a few parting with 10k to walk up Mt. Humphrey and have their picture taken with the boys - which probably compromises the 'bonding' trip, but brought the costs down significantly.

Still - the 'Your Name Here' Goal Posts are a certainty for 2015 if you want to pony up the cash.

Good. Absolute waste of time and money, in terms of the fitness benefit. The physical adaptations can be achieved by effective use of an altitude facility at sea level. We have one of those:

The overseas trip was always more about bonding, and team challenges. These can also be successfully done locally at much lower expense.

Not quite right - you can't replicate the real thing....but for what they were doing and the time they were doing it for - very little benefit.

Yeah that's what I was getting at: they could achieve with their facility here the same (minimal) adaptations as they gained from such limited time O/S.

Agreed though, no comparison between the "real thing" and a chamber, specifically when we're talking a prolonged period of cumulative time "i.e. live at altitude, train at sea level".

We should stick to the Northern Suburbs. Just get the team to run up that hill near Bundoora Golf Course for a couple of weeks (Mt Cooper). Apparently it is the highest point in the metro area. They can catch the tram there each day.

Do you think we could save cash with fare evasion?
Surely those inspectors couldn't catch the whole team. Brock may be in trouble though.

Got to prioritize getting believe and confidence into the players minds. That's most important.
Just keep them physically sound and mentally healthy.

Altitude training has become a staple for long distance triathletes (e.g Ironman), with many basing themselves in Boulder Colorado such as Craig Alexander. Many of the top professionals in triathlon (and cycling) use altitude training to increase their aerobic capacity among other things. To say altitude training is a waste of time is ill informed and naive.

And Doc is right you can't replicate the real thing.
