Everybody, coach included knows how mentally weak our players are.
Would anybody know if they are accessing psychological help to assist them with this.
Reason I'm asking, (here comes another example using Liverpool FC) is that I saw a recent interview where Liverpool player Jordan Henderson spoke about how he and some other Reds players started seeing a sports psych late last year when the Reds were struggling, and the Club hasn't looked back since.
For those not into the World Game, Liverpool has risen from 7th last year, to now being on the cusp of their first Championship in 24 years, with many players in the best form of their careers.

totally think they need it.
it's why I wanted Roos.
a firm and steady hand, and the kind of talk that gets through to young players.
since we don't have that, then I reckon it's essential.

Forget psychological help, being able to kick straight might be a good place to start

Maybe we should hypnotize them like Port did with their players.

Not at all, but starting at the happy happy joy joy, touchy-feely end of the chain seems to have been tried unsuccessfully for some time with this group. Time to try something else.

I don't believe it's psychological. Might be with some but not as a group.

The fact is we haven't recruited the right "characteristics" in our players. Too many introverted and soft players for AFL standards.

Not mentally tough and no amount of psychological assessment and programs will change that. This is football at the elite level. You can either handle it or you can't.

When your team is full of lazy FIGJAMs, no amount of psychological help would make any difference.

I didn't realise the world revolved around Liverpool, FFS. You'd think nobody else had won the league in the last 24 years and that it's some sort of novelty for a team to finish top.

Sports psychs aren't exactly new, wouldn't the club have had one on staff (at least part-time) for the last decade or more?

I wouldn't be surprised if they already had sports psychologists at Carlton. I'm of the view all sport is 70% physical and 30% mental anyway. If either of these are out of balance it will effect overall performance.
Actually I wouldn't care if it was reported the guys were doing yoga or deep sleep therapy if it produced results. I think they should look at any program that may give them an edge over the competition.

You only have to look at Essendon*'s "program" ...

..not sure what psychs you're thinking of, but happy happy joy joy isn't anywhere near what they ought to be about.. .... ..maybe yer thinking more counselling, but even then it's much more about getting them where they need to be, rather than just soothing anxiety for the sake of it.. ....but a good psych should be working them towards accepting what is gong on, front on.. ..getting down to what is honestly wanted, and more importantly needed and going from there.. ..of course that is a door that once opened may not be closed, and some may discover hat being a successful footballer isn't what they truly desire after all..
