Huh?

We failed miserably by drafting Murphy, Gibbs and Kreuzer?

Give the me the top second round, third round, fourth round draft picks from those same years that are the backbone of our best 22 today.

You can't really tank to secure 2nd/3rd/4th rounders though, can you? At least not in that period before the change to the priority pick rules anyway..

The point being we embraced the draft by making sure we get as many top picks as possible. And we got more than Melbourne, Hawthorn and even StKilda in the end.
Answer me how many premierships that earned us?

I believe the correct answer is zero.

Great. How have Melbourne and St Kilda gone with their draft pick piling up? Hawthorn isn't a valid example (outside of 08) given they essentially hit the jackpot in 04, and then proceeded to shit the bed in every other draft (Thorp over Selwood) or trade away for established players wanting to play in a flag.

One of the main reasons we haven't been able to improve our draft position in recent years has been the poor state of our list and lack of trade currency that our players have, (save for the recent Hampson trade for pick 30 odd which landed us Docherty).

We will need to make some bold player for draft pick trades in the future in order to keep rejuvenating out list.

I think this is symptomatic of our list management issues also. We throw money and multi-year contracts at these guys, and when we finally decide to offload them they've either lost any trade value they might've once had, or they're locked into a contract that one of the parties would have to pay out. Our trading strategy is a reflection of our list management strategy, which is a reflection of our development, which is a reflection of our upper management etc. It's all one big snowball.

none of that would matter if we were good judges of cattle. Historically we were not.

since 2002 there have been 7 clubs that have won a premiership. 11 that havent.

Brisbane
Port
Sydney
West Coast
geelong
collingwood
hawthorn

Of those only 4 have really "got it right" . my point being that it is harder than you are implying. We are not alone in this sea of mediocrity, yet we are the only ones that started with massive penalties. We are not alone.

This list has too many unknowns, brace for a massive reality check.

The club is mediocre from top to bottom.
Gibbs would have been a superstar at Geelong as would have Murphy.
Problem with our club is off field then on field.
You never judge on field when your off field is rubbish...

..I think we can.. ..I think we had/have definite potential.... ..and I think we can almost quantify how short we will fall from said potential due to off field mediocrity..

Interesting stat from Jake Niall:

Quote:
it is worth noting that no club has won a flag, certainly not over the past decade, with a player paid more than a million dollars in that year; usually, premiers have had barely anyone on upwards of $700,000.

Good article.

The exact same words came out of my mouth when I read it; still, I'm hearing mixed messages, even from Trigg.

Rubbish article.
We tanked to draft top picks and failed miserably with our drafting not trading.
We embraced the draft (how many top 20 picks did we get again) but failed to nail the picks.
I will debate this until the cows come home. We did very little trading during that period, actually have done more trading during the last 2 years than the last 7.
Judd was a once off trade and journalists have built a case over it. :yikes:

You have tanking on the brain (in a negative sense) and you have missed the point.

I'd hazard a guess that many of the picks we got 'wrong' were part of the 'short term fix' mentality the article was referring to. We talk about how the kids will take time (rightly) but we pick them as if we need them yesterday. They were also talking about how we approach trading, not that we have or haven't traded. Next you will be telling us that tanking has somehow magically informed our draft selections as opposed to human 'error'. When will you finally get it that tanking is a symptom and not a disease?

I guess as long as you see tanking a positive than all is good.
It also has no bearing on the culture it created within our club over the past 20 years.
Even our supporters don't give a flaming if we lose anymore. :banghead:
