What is our total debt?
Did we pay some of that off? Even a little bit?

In the financial statements it says the current Gaming Machine Entitlements expire in August 2022.
Does anyone know what that means ? Does it mean our machine licences finish then? Would that mean the licences have to be repurchased at that time? If so I imagine that would involve considerably more than the $1.5m they originally cost in 2010/12?

Carlton hasn’t played in a preliminary final for about 20 years and is in debt. And has been trying to dig itself out of debt for years.

With that backdrop-why is AFL’s distribution of funds to Carlton so much smaller than other clubs?

St Kilda gets about 6 million more from the AFL than Carlton.
Sydney, despite having big crowds, Buddy, big membership, premierships - also gets paid more by the AFL.
Brisbane in 2018 got 6 million more than Carlton. Why?
1-2 million more some could understand (maybe) but 6 million!!!!

Sorry!
In 2018 Brisbane got a whopping 10 million more than Carlton.
Why?
Both clubs were struggling... yet only one had won 3 flags in a row in early 2000s though.

So Brisbane now shoots up the ladder with the AFL assistance and Carlton is left languishing yet again down the bottom of the ladder. With those funds maybe $ can be put into membership services or off-field development. It all preserves an inequality.

Sick system, sick socialist system of taking and giving to preferred clubs.

So whilst reading about Brisbane getting 10 $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ million more than Carlton in their AFL dividend, I get sent this message by email from Cain Liddle:

"The Club has eliminated $3.4 million of historical debt in the last six months. The Club is now on track to completely eliminate the remaining $3 million of historical debt over the next 18 months – well ahead of our initial forecast when the plan was launched. This will see the Carlton Football Club debt free for the first time since 1996."

Oh I get it, Carlton has to scrib and save and beg members to get out of debt whilst Brisbane just gets a hand out from the AFL for ...well, being Brisbane!

Hooray for Brisbane! three cheers for Brisbane!

It has taken Carlton over 25 years to get out of debt (no thanks to the AFL) but it takes only one pen's wiggle for the AFL executives to hand over 10$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ million more to Brisbane.

Nice system.

So nice... and equitable.

That’s how socialism works. Mates’ rates for a “greater cause”. Suns are mates!

It is nice to know that the AFL values Gold Coast far more $15 million more than a club that has been there since 1864.

Quote:
Dear BV,

Today our football club is pleased to announce a net operating profit of $34,639 for 2020.

This operating result has contributed to us declaring a statutory net profit position of $3,651,912 for the year ended 31 October 2020.

Due to the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our gate receipts and other revenue streams, our operating revenues declined by over 36 per cent. However, the overwhelming and record-breaking support of all our members and many other stakeholders, means that the Club will not require additional financial assistance from the AFL, nor will it increase its debt position.

Despite the restrictions imposed on game-day attendance, our membership base grew by four per cent to reach a record-high 67,035 members. Our members stepped up like never before to ensure that the Club remained financially independent.

This outstanding show of faith in the direction of the Club contributed to our cash position almost doubling to $11.8 million (up from $6m in 2019), placing the Club in a strong starting position for 2021. The Ikon Park redevelopment has not been impacted and is proceeding as planned.

There was also continued, year-on-year growth through our non-traditional revenue streams of Carlton IN Business and the Carlton College of Sport, while the Club’s commercial partners were profound in their support throughout the entire year.

Our football club’s ability to handle the extreme financial challenges of 2020 and to deliver a positive financial result is a testament to the effort and contributions made by everyone associated with the football club. This is an exceptional achievement of which we should all be proud.

As a Board, we have maintained focus on the 10 key targets contained within our strategic plan. This has allowed us to navigate the difficulties and challenges of this year, whilst maintaining a clear focus on our key priorities.

I would like to commend our players, coaches and staff. Everyone at Carlton has felt the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Salaries were cut, players and staff spent months away from their families while living in hubs and many of our staff were stood down.

Sadly, the financial implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on our club and across the competition, forced us to implement a restructure, with almost 30 per cent of our workforce having their roles made redundant. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those staff for their service. We wish them the best for the future.

Kind regards,

Just read an email from the club that I received this morning.
The remaining $4 million debt has been repaid and we are now debt free.
We have advised the AFL that we will no longer be a financially assisted club.
Great effort.

I wonder how much of the debt reduction is down to good financial management and how much is due to increased membership?
