A mate shared this article on my Facebook wall and I thought many of you would appreciate it.

Sorry if it is not in the right forum.

http://presentationnight.net/youth-young-manhood/

Synopsis:
Quote:
Since 1997, Toby Martin has been the singer and songwriter with the great Australian band Youth Group. Over the course of their career they have released four cracking albums, had a number one single with ‘Forever Young’ and toured the world with the likes of Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Interpol and Death Cab For Cutie. Toby is, in our humble opinion, one of the great Australian songwriters of the past 20 years. Here, he writes beautifully of growing up in Carlton, his love for the game, and how it connects him to his Dad.

"...one of the great Australian songwriters of the past 20 years" (of a band I've never heard of whose only noteworthy moment is a cover) ??? I couldn't read anymore after that.

Sometimes opinions are wrong. That one's pretty laughable.

Thanks Ponkstar. I lost my dad 5 months ago, he was the reason my brothers and I became such strong Carlton people. So the article, especially the end, was quite poignant for me.

A few highlights from dad's footy 'career'...he went to his first game in 1944 at the age of 9. It was the last game of the season against Footscray. I win or draw in Carlton would play finals, a loss and Footscray would finish 4th. Scores were level when the final siren sounded, with the Dogs' Harry Hickey kicking from 50 out. Bob Chitty marked it on the line, but the goal umpire gave it a point, and we lost by a point. He watched the 1945 Blood Bath GF from the police horse enclosure at Princes Park (the police asked him if he wanted to go in as the crowd was a mad crush), had a huge barney with his mother who wouldn't let him go to the 1947 GF for fear of him getting TB or Polio (my memory fails me), he was there the day Fred Fanning kicked 18 at the Junction Oval (he lived in St Kilda at that time, and sometimes walked to the Junction Oval with the gardener, who was a St K supporter...it was cheaper than the trams to Carlton) and there the day Simon Beaumont kicked 8 in the first half against Collingwood (at half time, we thought he might be a member of an elite club. Alas...). He went to the drawn GFs in 1948, '77 and would have been at the draw in 2010 had he not given his ticket to his St Kilda supporting grandson (that would have put him in a very unique club).

As a new season dawns, the first without dad, reading that article brings home how much he is missed.

I've interviewed Toby a few times - lovely fellow. I had no idea he was a Carlton supporter. Looks like we won't be talking about boring stuff like music next time .. :)
