I came across this article. Quite amusing actually. http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/the-pre- ... 14-part-i/ "If you want to know how black things got for Carlton in the post-Matt Clape era3, the number 6 jumper is a good place to start. Murray Vance is a good place to start." The writer puts a good case that the rot set in 2 years after Clape left- "3. Two years after Matt Clape retired, the rot set in. Coincidence? No." Hopefully we are moving into a post-modernist pre-Patrick Cripps domination era, thereby moving on from the post-Matt Clape era. He narrows it down to five players to invest in. Quite a wise decision there. |

Thanks for that -- fear I may have bitten off more than I can chew re looking at the rest of the list. I've high hopes for Cripps. Then again, I was bullish about Murray Vance also... |

The five I will invest time in are in no particular order C Judd- 3 votes & AFL MVP J Garlett - freak skills T Bell- I like what he brings to the table. Please, please, please deliver. L Henderson - proven match winner K Simpson or Z Tuohy...have to ponder on that one. |

Murray Vance...it sounds like a footballer's name suited to the strong Carlton era of the 1930s-40s to go alongside Bob Chitty, Ron Savage etc......and he was a first round draft pick, so I can understand how one can get false hopes, but going by our record on 1st round draft picks there is never any cause for optimism. Pick 6 - 5 games We always think the next recruit will deliver. Few of them do. I think Vance had at least one good game- didn't he? |

Just on Murray Vance he did struggle early on but in one pre season he looked very promising. It was a pre season game against Freo at Waverly I think and he Vance was dominating ........ Clive (as in Clive Waterhouse) broke his jaw and that was the end of his career. |

Never saw Murray play a single game of footy. As for Nick Duigan - bit harsh dropping him so soon....he's still on the list you know! http://www.carltonfc.com.au/football/pl ... or-players |

Yeah, was tempted to keep Duig's on the list. I'll Hall of Fame him a couple of years from now though. |

Where's the pic from? Wonder what his role there is - as my understanding is that he's unable to play anywhere else -- even a country league -- in 2014. |

He's playing coach for Towns in the Great Northern Football League in Geraldton. Says he wants to play in June - the knee won't let him play before that. |

Clive (as in Clive Waterhouse) broke his jaw and that was the end of his career. That happened right in front of me...I heard the jaw snap. It was on the boundary and Vance was picking up the ball and Clive lined him up...didn't go for the ball at all. MV was never the same....and I bet his jaw never set properly either....so he had a constant reminder of what can happen and never put his head over the ball after that...career over. Can't say I blame the AFL for 'cleaning up' the game.....the Vance incident alone was really sickening... |

Must admit I was laughing out loud when you said a Jeffy Garlett musical needs to be made. Love that kid. |

Simmo, Jiffy and Duigs were there for me too. Hendo. I have to have him. yeah..Bell and Hendo for me. (If it has to be 5) but..Gibba's new haircut is a plus. also..he seemed a bit gruntier, or was I imagining it? |

As others have said, he showed reasonable promise in '99 in the few games he played towards the end of that season, broke his jaw during an Ansett Cup game at Waverley the following pre-season and didn't fire a shot after that. It was never obvious to me why he was such a high draft pick. Didn't have any attributes that stood out to me and he carried more puppy fat than Menzel did 12 months ago. Vance had a reputation as being a good mark for his size but we didn't see much of that in his 3 years (I remember Shifter saying he was a 'Peter McConville type' when we drafted him)... ![]() Is it true that Shane O drafted Vance because he saw him take a great mark in a country game? I'm sure we wouldn't have used pick #6 on a player just for that alone...would we? ![]() Anyone remember much about Murray in his draft year and if/why he had big wraps on him? |

To short for a key position, he was 189cm and thought he was going to grow, and to slow for the midfield, so he he fitted our KPIs perfectly, either that or they thought they were drafting Murray Rance. ![]() |
