MM has this year and next year. I hope we're already thinking about succession planning. MM is not young and his wife has been unwell which may cause him to opt our after 2015.

So who to replace him?

This may be controversial but I would have Ratten back. I think he would be learning a lot at the Hawks and would come back wiser, still passionate but and hardened, and hopefully with a better list than he had.

I think Ratts proved to all and sundry that he's not senior coaching material. Very good assistant coach though...always was. No shame in being a good 2IC.

As for Life after Malthouse...I can't help but think this is 6 years away. Little reason to think otherwise.

Don't you have to win a flag or two before you can be welcomed back to coach the Blues?

Also, he mentioned during an interview on the weekend that he is already thinking beyond the current contract and would coach on if the club wanted him to. Which of course it will, unless it goes completely tits up.

His comment re; coaching was intriguing, actually. He basically acknowledged that the window had more or less closed, and the recruitment of Docherty, Everitt, Thomas etc was very much geared around providing support to Murph, Gibbs etc to bring through a new batch of kids and maintaining a high level of competitiveness in the medium term once the likes of Judd, Carrots, Waite etc retire. he certainly didn't say that they weren't planning/striving for success now, but it was a very honest appraisal of the list and what the planning was during the trade/draft periods.

Interesting to read your perspectives. I'd be more than happy for MM to continue if he periodically got in new assistants to get in fresh ideas, like he has this year.

There is a Hollywood romantic in me dreaming Ratts might return to win us no.17

Mick will be here for a fair few years yet. I also don't believe in succession planning, rarely works.

When it is time for Mick to move on we look around and get the best coach for us at that time.

he is right in what he is saying sort of -some ex-greats have gone on to be brilliant coaches
Its the person not necessary the player that makes a good coach
and it is the administration that provides the environment for a coach to succeed

For someone who has coached for 28 years with the talent he has had at his disposal, Darth Vader has been ordinary at best. I really think you would have done a better job Synbad. Just imagine what Clarkson would have done after 28 years.

I have to agree with those that suggest he will be here a while yet. He might be old but is very fit and fiercely determined.

One thing I have noticed is that MM has brought in big bodies through his 1st active draft. It has done my head in over the last few years seeing all the midgets we have drafted.

I think it is fair to say Mick will be given the chance to build his own team, and given more than two drafts to do so.

Mick changed his game based philosophies last year and he will have to continue to do so to succeed.
The idea of pushing an extra player up to the stoppages and then kicking to where the opposition have the numbers will fall further away in 2014.
Teams are becoming more proficient at containing and moving the ball where the numerical advantage exists. We'll be torn apart if we continue to give the ball back to them.

Mick may be highly rated by some but our board has shown a willingness to throw anyone under the bus to save their own skins. I hep for Micks sake he can continue to adapt and eventually succeed because there won't be a lot of margin for error.

The one thing that bothered me in the Kangaroos game, was the bombing long to no-one in particular or more importantly to the North spare man in our forward line on more than one occassion. Lets just say I was hoping that would not be as evident.
