Time has passed but Ron Barassi's aura has not as former players reflect on his influence

IT'S been 45 years since Ron Barassi emerged as possibly the greatest of all footy coaches, leading Carlton to the 1968 premiership.

But time has not dimmed his status with the players he inspired to that historic triumph, the first flag the Blues had won for 21 years - and a major step forward in the club's progress to the point where it now shares the record of 16 with arch rivals Essendon*.

In fact, it has probably increased it.

Barassi was welcomed with great warmth to a reunion of the first of the four premiership sides he coached - two with Carlton, two with North Melbourne - which was held at a most appropriate venue, ruckman Percy Jones's Lygon St pub.

Ian Collins, Robert Walls, Barry Gill, Ian Robertson, Billy Bennett, Bryan Quirk, Denis Munari, Serge Silvagni, Adrian Gallagher and Neil Chandler were there, while John Nicholls, Alex Jesaulenko, Kevin Hall, Brett Crosswell and John Goold were among the apologies. It is an honour roll any club would gladly call its own.

Also there were Geoff Southby, another legend of later premierships, and Ted Hopkins, who was part of the even more famous 1970 flag, which is generally recognised as Barassi's finest moment.

Good read

Nice stuff.

Good to see a photo of Bill Bennett in there too.

7 games in 1968 - 4 goals - 1 premiership.

Thanks Don, good start to the day.

I knew Billy Bennett through my mate who worked with him. We went to visit him during one of his stays in hospital. As we approached we saw there were 2 guys already there. My stirring mate muttered, ''I'll take the guy on the left (Adrian Gallagher), you take the little guy sitting down''.
When the intros were made the ''little guy'' stood up.
Err..Rick McLean !!! :yikes:

Rick McLean...made Mal Brown (and his son) look like cleanskins.

Still Rick comes from good lineage though. The best blood possible - navy blue blood from Rod "the protector" McLean.

Bill Bennett has a lot of mates in the NT through his playing and coaching stints at St Marys and Nightcliff in Darwin and West Alice Springs. He was an inspiring coach who led by example and got the best out of his players.

Yes....a nice article by Ron Reed.....kinda sad to once again read that Barass's memory is fading as it has.

As I detailed in my Scrapbook a few years ago; I was lucky enough to be at PP when Barass arrived in 1965; and I never missed a training night or a match from that day on....it was riveting stuff to watch it all unfold.

Let's hope a new version of History repeats with Mick at Carlton.

Thanks for the link Don.

I know some North players coached by Barass don't hold him in the same affection, so I wonder if he got tougher as his coaching career matured?
