CARLTON has made a million-dollar turnaround on the back of hiring coach Michael Malthouse last season.

The Blues will today announce car manufacturer Hyundai will extend its joint major sponsorship for another four years on the day the club unveils superstar recruit Dale Thomas at Visy Park.

5000 extra members at approximately $175 each - that's around an extra $875,000.

Thanks Mrs Pratt.

Carlton and Richmond get 95,000 people to a final and have numerous other big crowds and make a profit of only $750,000....?

What happens to the gates in finals by the way - are there different rules?

They didn't put the gate figures for the elimination final anywhere..

Either way, make sure you get your membership so the money goes to Carlton and not to "outside interests". eg games at Etithad Stadium if you aren't a member and you turn up to buy a ticket only about 36%-60%? of that revenue goes to Carlton. If you are a member - all of it goes to Carlton.

We are still a long way behind Collingwood and Hawthorn in the arms race. A long way to go.

I thought Hyundai were pulling the pin this year and that was why Juddy was auctioning off his car?? Anyway, happy to hear that this isn't the case.

Firstly - this is great news. The Hyundai extension is really fantastic and Greg Swann and Anthony Barham should be congratulated. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to obtain and retain sponsorship right now.

There are no gate takings for the finals distributed to clubs. The AFL keeps the gate takings. Instead - there is prizemoney. Carlton received $110,000 for making the semi-final. Richmond took home $71,500 for losing the elimination final. But the free kick into the finals wouldn't have gone unnoticed. You can measure how much exposure Hyundai got during that final. It helps enormously.

If true, that's quite astonishing.

Thanks Doc Sherrin.

Surely this is the time that gate sharing should continue- qualifying finals. At least until the Grand Final...either that or Carlton should have received more than $110,000 for making the semi-final.

A fair amount of prize money would have been about $300,000 for all the goodwill and benefits Carlton gave the AFL by staging a remarkable game. Arguably one of Judd's greatest moments as well when he kicked that goal in the last quarter.

The rugby people would kill for the pr benefits that a blockbuster game with 95,000 provides. The quality, colour and spectacle of it all...and yet Carlton gets rewarded with just $100,000? That really isn't good enough. The AFL owes Carlton a bit of money as far as I can see it.

I think it's reasonable. You can't buy that exposure - so there's always another way to look at it other than the 'promoter' taking all the cash from the 'performers'. We may have put on a show, but the AFL put on the show.

Premier: $1.21m, Losing grand finalist: $660,000, Preliminary finalists: $330,000, Semi-finalists: $110,000, Elimination finalists: $71,500. I'd like the AFL to push the prizemoney angle a bit more in their marketing. $1.21 million is a nice chunk of change. Hawks would probably have made that again on merchandise sales.

You should have seen how many people downloaded the app. Incredible. There's a lot of Carlton supporters out there. The challenge is to get them to part with their cash and for that cash to go directly to the clubs' coffers.

I'm still worried about how the club's public comments have all been about the "bravery" of the Port and Richmond victories ... rather than the utter disgrace of the performance against an injury ravaged Sydney. I just hope the internal assessments are a whole lot more realistic than the drivel we're being served up on the club's communication channels since September.

Public comments should be positive, it's how you attract members.

4 more years with Hyundai!

Great stuff - a secure long term deal can only be a good thing!

You can't market 'pathetic' to the masses though...there's no alternative but to market 'hope'

Funny? If you read TC regularly you might be led to believe by some all knowing guru's that Swanny is struggling.

Go figure :smoking:

He has struggled though C'man! We're still a sponsor down on where we should be! 'But' I'm more than happy to congratulate Greg and Anthony when necessary. He's batting about .500 in my book.
