Being a Bluebagger has been quite a journey. Given my vintage, I have been fortunate enough to see the 70, 72, 79, 81, 82, 83, 87 and 95 flags followed by 18years of mediocrity including some wooden spoons. 2002 was particularly horrendous with our first wooden spoon and our draft penalties delivered by former Essendone player and President and then AFL Chairman Ron Evans. With our aging list and the club almost bankrupt we copped a massive $987,000 fine and lost 1st 2 draft picks for the next 2 years. This was despite the Bombers were only fined $388,000 and 1st 2 draft picks for only 1 year when they breached in 1999…no conflict of interest there Ron!!! You can understand my delight when the supplements story broke and knowing our arch rivals would suffer the inevitable fall out. Watching the Bombers squirm, deflect and be in total denial during the season was great fun as the stories kept breaking it was the gift that kept on giving and will continue to do so. • First they lost their CEO Ian Robson, headhunted from the Hawks, he had no option but to fall on his sword. • President David Evans resigned after having a mental breakdown directly attributable to James Hid leaking to Demetriou phone call to Evans What amazed me was the complete failure of the Essendone faithful to consider that any members of their club was in any way to blame for this, in fact their righteous indignation I believed polarised the other clubs against them. This seemed to be validated by the other 17 club presidents who informed a surprised Paul Little to eat a giant bag of dicks!! Then the phone call from a Bombers players mum bought this whole saga to a close. It was extremely gratifying on Tuesday when Former Blues Premiership captain Mike Fitzpatrick delivered the AFL sanctions that would bring the Bummers to their knees with James gone, $2M fine and loss of 1st 2 draft picks for the next 2 years. The Bummers brand is damaged forever, the loss of 1st 2 draft picks for the next 2 years will almost certainly be exacerbated by the final ASADA and WADA findings not being delivered by trade week, rendering any player trades into the 1st 2 rounds highly unlikely. More to come… Watch this space Then, the pièce de résistance. The Blues had the chance to take the spot in the 8 that the Bummers had occupied all year but were absolutely pathetic for the first 2 ½ Quarters which prompted a Bummer mate to jump the gun and fire some barbs. He was strangely absent when the Blues produced a miraculous fightback … suffice to say I thanked him for the finals spot and wished him a good summer. It will drive them crazy that we took their spot. We probably won’t progress past the 1st week of the finals but with a likely match up with the Tigers who have been our biaches over recent years, who knows. Supporting the Blues is hard work, a poster on a blog I follow summed it up “like that ex that you know is going to break your heart but in the end you still let them into your bed” Go Blues |
