Post subject:  That jar on the top shelf

At home we have a pantry with the items on the shelves stored by their quality. Much like spirits in a bar. Bottom shelf has your vegemite, peanut butter and so on. Middle shelf has chocolate sauce and the la di da vinegars and stuff. Top shelf has some lovely imported jam from places far and exotic. Only to be used to impress the neighbours.

So, anyway, the other day I was having breakfast. Toast and tea, the usual. My toast had popped up from the toaster, I was letting it cool a bit as is the norm. While doing this I was preparing the butter and spreads. What to have today? The regular and homely vegemite was the answer. It was my staple, it's familiar, I know all its good points and its bad points. Vegemite is pretty thin, if you spread it too liberally, its just too much. Get it right though and it's nigh on perfection. But, no matter how hard I tried I could not open that jar. That's funny I thought to myself, I've tasted success from this jar before. Not today.

What to do? Well, middle shelf is out, I guess. I'd better go for some of that imported jam. I carefully pick up the jam and behold its beauty. There is no denying this jam will deliver the perfect blend of fruit, sweetness and satisfaction. So, best get that lid off and sugar coat my toast.

You know what. I couldn't get the bloody lid off this fancy jam either. No matter how hard I tried. Hot water, multi-grips, tea towels, I tried every trick in the book. This is some special jam I thought to myself. I did have a little success though. I did manage to break the seal and I know I will taste this jam very, very soon.

So, I had to settle for a soothing cup of tea. Something familiar still, but I threw in another teaspoon of sugar, just to sweeten things up some more. You know the funny thing? As I was packing up the bread, vegemite and jam I noticed something. That vegemite was past it's use by date, and the jam is good for another few years.

camelboy, we always have imported or lovingly home made jam in our breakfast nook.

We have just been waiting for the rest of the neighbourhood to jump on the jamwagon with us. :D
