Perception seems to be that we're not hungry at the contest.

Interesting little snippet in the Sunday Hun today.

We've won contested possession in 6 of 7 games. Glaring downfall was the Saints game

vs

Geelong +3 (in our favour)
Eagles +15
Crows +41
Melbourne +34
Saints -13
Port +29
Lions +40

Its not just about the hard ball gets.

its about the hard choices on the field.

running harder.

remember andy ottens in the second haf kicking 3?
well he could have kicked 5 or 6.
why?
cos we dont have guys working hard enough to plonk themselves into holes to stop people from having space.

we dont work hard enough both ways...

the contest is in many areas on the park not just around the ball...

what garlett and army did for yarran is a contest....
making sure you stick a tackle etc....
holding the ball up till you get wiling players in support is part of the contest
getting numbers around the ball and spreading when you do have it or getting numbers back is the contest
standing up in a tackle is part of the contest..
Kicki ng a goal for your team is competitive football... instead of passing on the responsibilty to someone else...
its all the little things that go unnoticed..

Theyre the little things we dont do as well as the very good teams

you cant do some and be crap at others....you have to do them all to compete and be a beast... individually and collectively...

Good... we can get the ball and we can run really fast

Now to work on kicking, handballing, shepherding/blocking, decision making, goal kicking, tackling...

Interesting numbers there NBH.

I was at the Saints game and at times I really thought we were trying to keep something in the tank after losing Ellard and Yarran in the first 15 minutes.
Warnock and Jamison were also both injured and Kreuzer didn't have game fitness behind him and ran around with concrete boots.

Surprising we were only 13 C.P.s down, really.

It's certainly a good sign, given the way we were regularly monstered on the inside last year. Obviously it helps a fair bit playing Cachia and Bell there, alongside of Robbo.

Contested possession is not as strongly correlated to winning games of football
Disposal efficiency
Meters gained
Are more important

Key indicators of hardness are
Tackle count
Shepherds
Distance per quarter (hard running)
Pressure acts that cause turnovers.
