Most people here when they were 18 were probably going through boxes of Kleenex.

Guys that can run but cant kick dont last 4 seasons at Geelong... see Kane Tennace...

five years and youre mid aged in footy terms
Lucas was top age when we drafted him.....
Watson wont make it...

Ad when these guys come in and give it their all (Ala Bentick.) they dont get bagged.
No improvement in 3 and 4 years means theyre not doing everything possible...

Hello Max Rooke.

This season, Kane Lucas has a higher disposal efficiency than:

Chris Judd
Andrew Carrazzo
Marc Murphy
Zach Tuohy
Dennis Armfield

Sakc them all!

Time to end your ridiculous potting of a player with absolutely nothing to back it up.

You say you've been spoiled and therefore expect the best. With 18 years since the last success, no wonder you're one bitter species.

Good article.

Lucas seems to have been challenged by MM, and I don't think he's disappointed.
I just wish he'd improve his disposal...and I think he can.
I don't think its fair to compare him with Carrazzo.
Lucas cost more than Carrazzo so the expectation is far greater from Lucas.

There's other parts of his game which would improve over the next preseason.
He seems to have stepped up this pre season...and by the end of the year...say the GF, he could end up being important.

Early doors, but I too have high expectations from first round picks.
I'm spewin about Russell because I believed for so long.

Watson, Lucas, Yarran, Hartlett, Hampson, Menzel, Bootsma, Buckley, McLean, Henderson, Walker or Russell, and even Grigg I expect success from all of them when we're building a team with the best available... if their body can hold up to the rigours of our game, but thats another story.

Shall we look at the facts on Kane rather than the rhetoric.

Drafted 2009 which meant starting 2010 - 8 games as 18yr old in 2010.

2011 - crueled by hamstring injuires which meant he missed many games and when he did play his fitness was well below par. 2 games. Hard to develope when you are injured so much.

2012 - Struggled to impact and Ratts had very little love for him. He lost confidence and struggled for the year overall - 8 games.

Pre 2013 he had a full preseason. He was very good in the trial and NAB cup games. So far he has played 5 from 5 under Mick and has certainly not been our worst player in any of the 5. He has probably been above average and consistent in all of them. So being 5 games into his 4th season, after almost missing an entire season in 2011 I can't really understand why you are so negative toward Kane. He has obviously improved in 2013 from where he was in 2012 so why denigrate him.

Doesnt explain why he was taken in the top dozen and cant kick... does not explain why he cant tackle and hasnt any strength whatsover after 4 years in the system.

just says he wasnt getting a game last year and wouldnt make the side of any good side this year....four years into his career....
there is no way he will be strong this year... and next year is his fifth season...so he is already half way through his career.....

so the question needs to be asked?
why would we use a pick on a guy who cant kick... and watsons case cant run or bend over...?
and why has he not helped himself by not working harder than he has to strengthen his core body???

is it cos Ratts didnt play him last year or cos of his injury 3 years ago???
or is it his mind is weak???

whatever it is... he wont be a star..... !!!..
Collingwood turfed out wellingham who has more vigour and better skills than Lucas..
Weak bodied players who cant kick are not very sought after .....especially the ones in their fourth year who have not bothered to do the work required.

What would clubs give us for Lucas if he was up for trade???
Think about it and get back to me.. cos thats where hes at!!!

If you are this bitter now over one of your classic 'beat up arguments' I hate to think what you will be like when you are 60. :yikes: :yikes:

That was a pathetic post, even by your standards Synbad

Dealing with your flaccid 'arguments' roughly in order

1) Where you're picked isn't a particularly good indicator of how good a footballer you'll be. Stop getting fixated on his number
2) Who says he can't kick? Who says he won't become a better tackler? Oh yeah. You. Over and over and over and over again. It must be true.
3) He's 3 seasons and 5 games into his career. You're exaggerating to suit your argument
4) How on earth would you know his chances of getting into a 'good side' this year?
5) Back to drafting again. Please, tell us more about your perfect eye for talent. There will be some recruiting positions opening up in the AFL this year, how many are you putting your hand up for?
6) His most injury plagued season was 2011. 2013 - 2011 =/= 3 years.
7) He won't be a star. Neither will 99% of his draft year. So what?
8) Wellingham has nothing to do with Kane
9) What a side would give us and what he is worth are two completely different things. I want to break something this is such a stupid statement

It's patently obvious that Synbad's being baited with this thread. Buggered if I know exactly why he has a fixation with Lucas but the whole 'poor Lucas' thing is just a diversionary tactic against the bigger picture. Some of you blokes are very misguided.

Synbad may be a lunatic but this is a better site with him than without him. Are you 'blokes' planning to immigrate to Bigfooty, or something? :screwy:

Bartels puff piece on young draftees means nothing Cazz.
Hes 4 seasons in and it does matter.

and yes it does matter where we take players and where they go from there.
The cream is early on not late in a draft...choosing guys like Lucas who cant kick.. and Watson cant run with early picks means you ultimately dont get the players in the team that you need to become successful
A team full of rookies.. means you have a bunch of early picks as busts.....
You wont see GWS and GC attempt to build their teams with a bunch of late picks and rookies.

Cazz? When is it acceptable for a you ng draftee to become a man ???

Why am i pissed off with Lucas as well as the recruiters?
Cos he has NOT worked hard enough on his defficiencies and we have people running to his defence to make excuses for the 22/23 year old... this is the kind of mentality that guarantees we dont win flags anytime soon.

Cazz posted a Bartel article on draftees needing time.
The reality is most footballers only are in the system for 4 seasons.

WAKE T F UP!!!

Very generalised article but I agree about not calling players "spuds".

Everyone is different and should be judged as such. So much depends upon background, size, mental maturity, development process, injuries etc.

The frustration for me is always this one size fits all edict. If only it was that simple.

Sheesh, take it easy. Young guns will always be blasted by irate fans, but now more than ever before they have the support network to assist them through this period. They also have better 'life training' opportunities than your average 18 year old and we're not even touching on their likely earnings in years to come.

Looking at the full draft from 2009 I've never heard of half the guys picked ahead of Lucas. I have heard of Gysberts though, (at Nth now I think - I'm happy with Brock). I reckon we've done alright with Kane.
