So we could have merged twice and put 130 odd years of history down the toilet.

Brilliant, the members would of never voted for it and Elliot would have gone sooner. So he really should have pushed for it, might have saved us a bit of trouble.

I thought this was common knowledge? I take everything Jack says with a grain of salt, so I'd be hesitant to think that the St.Kilda talks progressed as far as Jack says they did. The Bob Ansett/North Melbourne stuff is common knowledge though.

Must be a world shattering moment for surrey who believed Elliott was a good and Collo a traitor. Lol

He thought it was the best chance we had to add another premiership to our collection.

From the days we did whatever it takes..,..

Jack just can't stand the fact that Essendon* have overtaken him as being the most unscrupulous entity in the history of the AFL

Exactly. He's got a history of opening his yap during moments of turmoil at other clubs.

It's the Saints 140th year this year. Russell Holmesby, the St Kilda historian has written a new book - Strength Through Loyalty...in it are details of discussions with Carlton during the mid-90's regarding mergers. Funnily enough - he used the same title for Robert Harvey's book. Anyway...John Elliott was asked to comment after some details from the book were released (it's out on Friday) and he gave comment as only Jack knows how.

There were two incidents with North, the first in the late 80s when we bought 20% of North Melb when there shares were listed on the ASX second board (Bob Ansett was President of North at that time) the second occurred during the 1999 season when Ron Casey was President of North and Elliott explored a merger with North, but they both shelved the idea as both sides obviously made the Grand Final that year and they reasoned they wouldn't get much support for the idea at both Commission and fan level.

The St. Kilda proposal is news to me, I can honestly say I had never heard of it.

On a geographic level the merger with North makes some sense, but the only motive behind a merger with St Kilda would have been to get hold of Lockett.

Plugger had already left St Kilda by 1995, which is the period when Elliott said the talks between him and Plympton were being held.

The 'why is he bringing it up now' has nothing to do woith John Elliott. Yesterday a St Kilda history book was released - it has a very short chapter called 'success' including 2 paragraphs, some pics and a Tasmanian - and it mentions this story. Elliott just responded to it today.
