I have two mates who have membership with Carlton and Sydney.
Internal conflict?

Ah, Sydney. They want their caviar and also the right to tell everyone how good it tastes and to STFU.

Name one other sport that allows such a massive difference in cap from an established side, and one that has had multiple premiership success?

Other clubs have a right to voice their displeasure.

GWS and Gold Coast I am comfortable with "start up" concessions but by the time they are established (let's say, 6 years), they should be eroded.

Sydney can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be they just choose to live in high expense items. I'm sure there's plenty of Melbourne and Perth players who are paying a pretty penny for housing.

Also, Swan was asked a question by AFL media, and answered it with his opinion. If this isn't allowed, I guess that means no more asking of questions to anybody, ever, for fear of hearing what people think.

I'm in complete agreement with the Swans here. But what's more disappointing is Greg Swann sticking his nose in. This has very little to do with Carlton. If prompted for an answer on the matter, why wouldn't he say 'That's a matter for the Swans and the AFL. We don't agree with it in principle, but I'm employed to deal solely with issues pertaining to the Carlton Football Club and this really isn't one.'

It is a matter for the AFL CEO's meeting which is held in November. So why wasn't this an issue then? Why do 7 (so-called) powerful clubs all of a sudden have to get together and want more control? Did Greg Swann get the short straw as to who would step up and say something? Did he really think it through? ....and Greg - What the hell has this got to do with Carlton when we are not paying down our own debt, but are still paying down the debt of the AFL by being a tenant at Etihad Stadium? And who - out of Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon*, Hawthorn, Richmond, Adelaide, Fremantle and West Coast is the odd one out? That answer is Carlton. The others either a) make buckets of money and are debt free and/or b) don't have much debt anymore.

Doc I think you've been sucked in by Caro here.

Read Gleeson's informative article about the many people who met about this topic. http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/t ... 2fc4x.html

Greg answers a media question, the media rats like Wilson go looking for some responses to keep themselves employed, and boom we have an "EXCLUSIVE OUTRAGE" article.

This isn't just Greg voicing his own opinion here.

They (the arguments) are both right.

The extra money in the cap does give Sydney an advantage and we should get rid of our debt and play finals.

It's pretty clear the allowance is exploited by Sydney.

Players 11-42 won't be seeing a cent extra out of the allowance.

How can Tony Shephard justify their extra allowance when their list is predominately players in their first or second years, earning close to base salary and a Scully and a few others being offered front loaded contracts so in a few years they'll still have room in the cap.

Our salary cap issues were 10 years ago, we've been clean since. Time for them to move on.

Bit hypocritical of the Swans to say we can't comment on salary cap related issues given how many times they have breached the cap.

Exactly. If the cost of living makes it so tough to live in Sydney, then those finding it toughest should be receiving that extra cash. Effectively the money's being used to make it easier for Kurt Tippett (and Daniel Bradshaw and Barry Hall and Tony Lockett, etc.) to live in Sydney. And given the salaries they're receiving, it's a non-issue. Any chance someone in the media will 'call' the Sydney president on this absolute nonsense?

I think if the Swans, for example, can demonstrate that their extra allowance is distributed equitably among their entire playing list then people may be more sympathetic to their claims. I suspect they can't do that.

However, the criticism that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, namely us, is perfectly understandable as well.

Two wrongs don't make a right though, so I think the Swans and GWS need to come up with some better comebacks than "Only Carlton cheats."

I don't really care what the Swans do. I don't care if the AFL look after clubs in traditional non-football markets via incentives. In fact I agree with it. I do care about our club looking after things in its own backyard and I'd prefer not for our CEO to get caught up in agendas that have little bearing on matters pertaining to our football club. This isn't our battle to fight. If Eddie McGuire wants to fight it - let him. The 'Magnificent 7' (or 8 ) don't have to agree on everything.

Caroline's editor (Janelle Ward?) has probably told her to let the Essendon* thing rest for a while. So she's picked up this and is running with it. It's a small story, but it's there - it exists. The Swans don't actually have to respond to the criticisms - because when it comes down to it - Swann et al. are criticizing the wrong party. They should be criticizing the AFL. But the AFL have helped Carlton out...so perhaps Greg Swann should open up the recent history books and take a look. Our own backyard doesn't look that great.

This needs a bit of clarification.

I recall hearing that each Sydney player gets a salary for football and then 9.8% on top of that figure.

Don't flower cry poor and try and get on the AFL gravy train if you're wasting 900k a year on cost of living incentives to recruit someone....

Clearly didn't need to as they just won the premiership but they want the same bigger slice of the gravy pot than a north or bulldogs....

Now that's hypocritical

Well they manage there list pretty well if they can win a flag and have the room to get Tippett.

I think we are very experienced in salary cap matters. We are the one's that copped the full brunt of the penalties like no other club has in history. Swannie probably should have been a bit more reserved but at least we are coming out saying what we feel which is more like the old Carlton. Lets hope Swann has our own house in order though.

Yep. And Hawthorn manage theirs pretty well to include Burgoyne the year after they won a flag and Carlton must be managing there's well if they had room for Travis Cloke and the Bombres must be doing ok to fit Brendon Goddard in etc etc...it's all game playing and posturing...and it's all controlled by McGuire - I wish the others wouldn't a) fall for it or b) Eddie came out and said he would like to relinquish the Collingwood Presidency to become an AFL Commissioner.

Hi Caroline...perhaps there's a better story in the aforementioned paragraph.

I don't understand the criticism by the swans or gws. We breached the salary cap years ago and we paid for it ... so what! Whats that got to do with the AFL giving extra advantage to the sydney teams. All melbourne teams should be up in arms about this because it affects them all adversely. Well done Greg Swann!

can hardly compare Hawks getting Burgoyne to Swans getting Tippett

And here was me thinking that David Evans and James Hird were being protected by the good ole boys network.
