Given present environment in football and how notoriously bad AFL clubs are at administration in general and the present furore over tanking (not recognised by afl ) third party contracts, salary cap ,gambling influences ,drug use (performance and non performance) I think we should be pro active and get an integrity officer in the football club as soon as possible - it would be costly but worth every cent if it prevents us falling foul of any of these issues |

Much like a company I worked for once, they had a couple of d1ckheads that cost them a lot of money on a number of transactions. Instead of getting rid of the people responsible (all a bit hard and some were family)they decided to appoint a Risk Manager to keep it from happening again. So they kept the problem and added an extra cost to the business. I'd much prefer that we had line managers who knew their jobs and the rules.. |

Yes. But not by choice. All clubs will have to have them. I'm ok with it, provided they're paid for by the AFL, not the club. With Juddy co-owning Eve nightclub and knowing 'racing identities' - the Carlton gig should resemble one long John Lennon FBI file. |

The ultimate position the AFL can put themselves in to control the clubs and the competition as a whole. |

I'm ambivalent. One serious slip up can have catastrophic consequences and derail an entire club for years. However the type of integrity issues we've seen of late have hardly been caused by rogue individuals (contrary to claims) but rather by groups of senior people at clubs acting in concert. Would one relatively low ranking integrity officer who is answerable to and employed by these senior people be in a position to intercede in a meaningful way. Would the low ranking integrity officer become enmeshed with the culture of the club, be keen to please his or her masters, and after a while be inclined to overlook certain matters. Stockholm syndrome. An integrity officer would need to be employed by and answerable to the AFL to be independent and effective. Surely the answer is better corporate governance overall with better checks and balances rather than employing more cardigan-wearing paper shufflers. |

I think we need one agree it should be funded/paid by combination of AFL and AFLPA so it is independent of influences at club but players have some ownership and can go to them if they need to be a whistleblower Integrity officer role should not just deal with drug issue but a whole plethora of regulatorty issues salary cap, thid party player payment ,gambling |

Do you reckon the AFL Narc will be given a prime office location at each club? Will the in-house coffee shop continue to stuff up their order? Will they always be eating lunch alone in the corner? The position may be warranted, but just imagine how much clubs will close ranks with the AFL rozzers on full time watch. It will take some very well prepared and adhered to guidelines/regulations with all parties on board if it's to have any hope of being effective. And how long until it is found that an integrity officer is on the take? It will happen. |

Agree camel but really need to have this position with a similar status as CEO at the football club and need to ensure that it is as far as possible incorruptible types that are given job -AFL should insist on certain conditions in respect to tenure ie access etc Wont be welcomed at club land but lets face it the reason these crisises happen is that the clubs are pretty fast and loose with the regulatory stuff and corporate governance cant tell me that if the right integrity officer was in at Essendon* sitting in on board /players/medical etc meetings that this fiasco at Essendon* would not have happened or would have raised the flag much earlier |

Yep, the theory is really good. Nailing the practice will be the hard part, and my faith in the AFL's ability to get something like this working effectively is rapidly diminishing. |
