Andrew Walker

needs to play forward. Body failed him. Can be a dynamic player. Ordinary compared to last year

Jordan Russell

Gone and forgotten

Marc Murphy

After a super start injury got the better of him. Does not work hard enough when he hasnt got the ball. Kicking can be suspect. A very good player but those two negatives hold him back from reaching the top bracket of midfielders

Bryce Gibbs

slow lacks grunt and takes too many easy options. Even his most loyal supporters are questioning how good he is.
His doesnt even mop up well in defence, preferring the chip shot sideways to a fellow passenger to keep his kicking effiency % at a healthy rate. For a number one pick very ordinary

Chris Judd
Champion who became frustrated by the lack of midfield support this year. Has lost a hard of pace and his kicking at times is poor. Needs to be relieved of the captaincy and maybe play more forward or even back this year to freshen him up.

Kade Simpson
found out a bit this year when being tagged for the first time. Wellingham didnt help his cause either. Needs to add more grunt to his game to add to his outside run.

Dylan Buckley

Showed a bit this year. Is a good kick and has some footy smarts. Needs to hit the protein tablets over summer.

Matthew Kreuzer

Nothing special. Plays with a lot of heart but plays like an old man . Even if he gets his body right he doesnt impress me as a ruckman and he hasnt the agility to play forward. Ironically all the tanking that went on and the Tigers land Cotchin who is a champion already.

Kane Lucas

Wont go into a pack because he may break a nail or mess a hairstrand. The fact that this guy played only a handful of games with all the injuries we had says how bad he was this year. Ordinary

Matthew Watson

Played well towards the end of the year which silenced his critics a bit. Will only be a defender because he lacks pace and agility. Is slow with a turning circle of a mac truck but may make it playing on the big mothers.
Dury still out though its early days

Robbie Warnock
I can think of 206 reasons why we shouldnt have him. His body is as reliable as a warm chicken bone, but even when fit doesnt evoke a massive presence on the field as all good ruckman should. Overrated

Mitch Robinson

As we know has a massive crack. Needs to improve his decision making, but has the potential to be part of the midfield.
reasonable season

Chris Yarran

Soft as warm butter. Needs to toughen up, get better overhead and his decision making needs to improve. In some games he tried to run half the field everytime he got the ball confusing his team mates. Look at Lewis Jetta. Similar player but Jetta does the hard things within the team structure such as the knock on to Hanneberry in the last quarter of the GF. Yarran is a talented but selfish footballer. Will be interesting how he goes under MM

Brock McLean
We finally got some reward for giving up pick 11 for him. Great second half where he finally got fit. If we are to go places as a club I see BM as that 5th or 6th midfielder in and under. He isnt any superstar which shows how bad we were as a club this year given how he stood out.

Jeremy Laidler

Terribly handled by our medicos. Should have got that knee sorted out and then come back.
One of the few good trades we have had. Missed his versatility in defence and his decision making. Roll on 2013

Andrew Collins

Very light on his feet but tries to do too much. Another player who needs to find a roll in the team. Perhaps MM may find him one next year.

Sam Rowe

Hopefully he will be with us in 2013

Paul Bower

can anyone tell me has Bower being given the arse. Had hopes for this guy but he hasnt put on weight to match it with power forwards , his kicking and decision making are crap and he took some short steps at times. Gone

Eddie Betts

Our best player this year. If we can get some guys over six foot to kicked goals would want to see Eddie as part of the midfield rotations. Has unbelievable soft hands and would kill them at the clearences. Needs to take the next step and become a mid fielder.
Cant complain about Eddie this year.

Rhys OKeefe
Time running out for this guy. Has a great left foot but I wonder if he has enough to make it. Simply has to get fit for starters.

Josh Bootsma

This kid showed a bit this year. Has a crack and has some footy smarts. I just hope he isnt one of these guys that cant put on weight. If not defence will be a no no as he got chucked around like a ragdoll at times. Hopefully this kid develops.

Shaun Hampson

My first choice as ruckman. Better at palming the ball than kreuzer and Warnock and can be of some service in attack. Nees to be injury free.Could be one of these guys that cant get his body right for long stretches . Hopefully megan gives him plenty of tender loving care. Yes we all wish

Lachie Henderson

Groins stuffed his season. Is probably a better defender than a forward where he can run straight at the ball. Future key defender. Have a bit of time for this bloke. He speaks well. Could be a future leader.

Patrick McCarthy

Early days but was just so and so in the maggos for a second year player. Perhaps suffered from the ordinary coaching structure .Has plenty of height but needs to put on some kilos. Needs to show something more in 2013 or he may be in trouble

Luke Mitchell

Finally got those dodgy shouldes right and like McCarthy early days.
He definitely can take a mark and is a good size but needs to improve his aerobic capacity. He was next to useless when the ball hit the ground even at reserves level. Plenty to work on

Andrew McInness

One of the finds of the season after finally getting a game because we had nobody else. Thanks MC. Cool under pressure a decent size so he can play on small and talls. Good decision maker. Hopefully he will be back towards the latter part of 2013

Dennis Armfield

Handy up forward this year. However he is an ordinary kick and a poor decision maker and I reckon he wouldnt be in the top 22 in a GF side. Does have a crack

Heath Scotland

Cant knock this guy. Been a great pickup. Reads it really well and an excellent kick. B and F just reward for years of consisteny.

Jarrod Waite

Flaky footballer. Even if fit I reckon his lack of consistency is the biggest knock on him. A shit kick for goal. At 30 wont get much better

Marcus Davies

Poor decision maker. Will be most interested to see how he develops under the new coaching regime. Could become part of the midfield as he has good endurance. Needs a good run with injuries otherwise could be a gonski at the end of 2013.

Brett Thornton

Gone

Nick Duigan

Has a crack . Kicked 3 goals in that upset win over the pies but IMO is a limited footballer and found out a bit in 2012. Another bloke with a shit kicking action.

Ed Curnow

LIke Duigan tries hard but wouldnt get a game in a GF team. Another crap user of the ball. Didnt get it enough anyway for a midfielder. IMO a list clogger.

Rohan Kerr
Gone
Jeff Gartlett

How did this guy not get dropped. Like Yarran a selfish footballer who needs to become a team player. Needs to get rid of the inflated ego.

Michael Jamison

Lost confidence this year. Ordinary season by his standards. Nees to get his body right for starters. Defenders need to attack as well. Jamison needs to do more of that in 2013. Big season coming up for him.

Levi Casboult

Finally a guy who can take a pack mark. Yippee. Now the club needs to work with him to become a reliable set shot. It can be done. At least the guy can do the hard part which is get it first. More mobile than I thought he was and has a bit of mongrel about him. Interesting times ahead

Zach Tuohy

Found the season too long. Needs another preseaon or 2 before we see the best of him. Reckon he has the potential to become a midfielder. Great kick and footy smarts.

Simon White

Dury still out but did finish the year off well. Will be 26 so important year for him. Another bloke whose kicking and decision making is questionable.

Andrew Carrazzo

Good to see this guy play in the guts. Is simply a ball magnet and great in close. Of course the Lonergan tackle [REDACTED] half his season. Reckon he should be our captain in 2013

Aaron Joseph

Simply not a defender. Limited player who again is a shit kick and poor decision maker. Can only see him as a run with player keeping gun opposition mids quiet. Big 2013 otherwise gone

David Ellard

Poorly treated by the selectors. Has a crack and a good kick capable of kicking goals. Better than Curnow.

Tom Bell Will be a fine midfielder. Huge body. Has a crack. Needs to improve his decision making. yet another player on our list who has a poor kicking action and needs to work on that aspect of his game. Potential

There you have it .
Good luck MM

Interesting.
The AFL coaches voted him champion player of 2011.
And yet you think he's not in the top bracket of midfielders.

Someone looks a bit silly.

Obviously the shoulder injury stuffed him and he wasnt right when he came back
Fact is his kicking isnt great. He favours his right side too much and he doesnt run hard enough when we hasnt got the ball a major problem with this team that Malthouse I am sure will try to address without much tagging.
And BV we are talking about 2012. I personally reckon he needs to work on those two areas I have mentioned to become the complete mid

Like it Keogh!!

If we are purely talking players there is not doubt in my mind that we have a number of players that have not even got close to their potential.

My key points for MM are:

Walker: Play majority inside 50 with some relief on the ball.

Murphy, Judd: Need support and relief from the physical side of the game. Time up forward will be a bonus

3 Ruckman: All different types. Min. 2 need to stand up.

Gibbs: Time to go to the midfield. Watch Pendlebury.

Simpson: Getting older and struggled under tag. Star but pressure will be on

Lucas: If he can stand up will make a real difference. Needs to work closer to contest.

Watson: Reads play well and a great kick. Speed over 20m needs to be improved. Can easily hold down CHB and release Henderson forward.

Yarran: Big pre season and could add to an awesome midfield rotation. Could be better than Jetta.

Laidler: Vital. Has poise and a great third man up player.

Collins: Can fill a position we struggle. Back Pocket. Looked a natural last pre season then forgotten. Hope MM gives him a go in that role.

Bootsma: Has star written all over him. I think MM will play him straight away. Can play as a "wing" where his body strength wont be exposed. Has poise and ability to win the ball. Our Nat Fyfe.

Overall improvement and game time into the kids. McCarthy, Davies, Buckley, Dale, Mitchell, Carter, Bootsma plus picks. On our list we need to see them play.

Carrazzo: From tagger to ball winner. MM doesnt tag much. Carrazzo is a ball magnet.

White: Needs to put pressure on Jamo for FB position. Underrated.

Settled back 6. Absolutely VITAL! for me: collins jamison laidler mcinnes/duigan watson okeefe.

Key forwards. Big Bodies. If Mitchell, Casboult, Rowe, Henderson, Hampson can all stand up we will be good. Releases Walker & Waite.

Midfield depth: Usual suspects in Judd, Murphy, Simpson, McLean, Carrazzo, Scotland need to be supported by Gibbs, Bell, Robinson, Yarran, Lucas, Ellard, Armfield, Buckley, Curnow, Garlett & Touhy.

Lot of positives and will be interesting to see. I'm excited

Interesting assessment psych and well done.
May I just add or deduct form the lads above?

Gibbs: Mid almost a certainty, but I'd sooner see him working center and forward of centre than to confuse him by sending him back again.
Looking forward to seeing him being chased than having to do the tagging.

Lucas: Rather than getting involved closer to the contest, Lucas makes for the better receiver.
Someone mentioned that Malthouse may work him into the Thomas type role and that just sits very favourably with me.
Such a good one touch player at his best, it may serve for him not to get beaten up but apply his skills elsewhere.

Watson: Confidence is key with this fellow. Body isn't quite right yet and believe it or not he's faster than what has been on display at times.
Brain though must engage quicker and he'll benefit from having time spent on his pitfalls.

Collins: Was told he'd be played in the back-line last year but that didn't quite materialize.
Have no idea what Malthouse has in store for him but as for several others, the confidence needs bolstering.

Bootsma: Just had to endorse your findings here. This kid blew me away the first day I saw him. Didn't expect the speed and skill-set to have been so far away from the action and for him to have fallen into our lap at #22.
Again a stern voice and a vote of confidence may take this kid a long way. Really looking forward to his future and running the flanks looks like his ultimate position.

Settled back 6? Absolute key for any team and we mixed and matched so much this year, that any cohesion was nigh on impossible.
Will reserve a prayer for this to happen next year and the rest will take care of itself.

It's a significantly better list than the Collingwood he took to two grand finals. The main puzzle pieces I see from your list are:

* Get Gibbs playing to potential
* Keep Waite on park
* Walker plays forward only
* Fix Levi's kicking
* Fix Mitch's disposal

as per dane, but add in toughness for the contest. Something I noticed was distinctly lacking in many games, especially against Adelaide, Hawthorn and Sydney.

Even GWS were harder at the contest than us for a half of football. It was a disgrace.

The front runner tag is justified and Mick will need to sort out the daisies from the weeds.
