Post subject:  Your kids & Carlton

This has come up in various threads but I thought I'd dedicate a discussion to it.

Your kids & their unwavering support for, or, hopefully not, defection from Carlton. It's topical for me as I have a 9 week old son who'll be going to his first game this Father's Day.

So those with kids from the depressed generation, those only old enough to have seen us when we've been shit...have they chosen other teams & have you bought them back?

Anyone's kids been enticed away from the Blues by other kids? What about the in laws...anyone had a good stoush on their hands.

And perhaps most importantly, who here has a young one who just packed it in when Trent Sporn was delisted?

And so on.

FWIW my wife's slightly reluctantly but graciously given me custody, although her parents have been putting the St Kilda feelers out over the last couple of months (OK that just sounded all wrong). Anyway should be an interesting day for us on Sun.

Your stories...

Both girls had been Freo supporters up until this year. I think they chose Freo so they wouldn't upset their Mum (WCE) and me by taking sides.

If Freo were not playing they would go for Carlton and after last years final loss at Subi they are now firmly in the Carlton camp.

It's funny because they became Carlton supporters about 2 years after I stopped trying to persuade them.

They are still a bit happy Freo will play finals and I'm happy to jump on board the Purple bus with them for Sept.

my kids are 3 and 5 and have been members from literally the day they were born

they both understand 'go blues'

5 year old daughter is slowly getting into it more

3 year old son still doesnt really care but likes his guernsey

daughter cops a lot of freo/eagles with the inlaws and at school but i tell her people who like those teams cant live in our house and she quickly remembers the right team

My 8 yr old son and 4 yr old daughter are Carlton all the way, especially my boy.

They don't have a choice really (lol) but my boy is very passionate. Also has an inherent hate for west coast, which warms my heart.

Over here, there is a lot of pressure from family to support west coast but they all know they have no chance with us.

He watches most games with me and every night when the lotto numbers come on he will tell me which Carlton player wears the number. Accurately too.

He loves Waite, walker, yarran, betts, Murphy and Judd.

I reckon if I lived in Perth I'd have a big soft spot for Freo.

Living in SA makes it difficult, especially as it's hard to convince your son to barrack for a side that we only get to see a few times a year.

What made it worse was this year our 2 games were "that" Port game, and we all flew over for the infamous Nth game. :donk:

Not sure how it all happened like this, but at this stage I couldn't see him changing. He's currently 8.

Whilst I spent most of the last quarter Saturday night scrolling through threads on my phone, I failed to notice that he was sitting there in the final minutes with tears streaming down his face.

You forget that whilst personally you arent that disappointed that you wont be making up the numbers in September, for him it was extending the season for at least one more week, and that and the McIness injury was for the me the most heart breaking part of the night.

We talk about supporting your side regardless. He has a Richmond/Port/Nth supporter mate (divorced parents!), and a "former Port but suddenly through half way last year Collingwood suporter"! mate who give him a bit of grief now and then, but he takes it well.

He jokes about how lucky he is that he only really starting supporting in 2008, and I give him heaps that he didn't have to endure the '02-'07 nightmare. First game was the Port game of '08 when the boys had kicked just 3 goals up until 3/4 time only for Kreuzer to light up the last helping us comeback from 30 points down.

First Melbourne game was the Essendon* final last year, and it's the first time he has ever not said a word during the footy for 2 hours. Just completely in awe.

I think part of the secret, was pushing him towards the Blues without forcing it down his throat before he reached the age to understand what it really meant. Kids from a young age can try to be very independent, and like to think that they are making their own decision. Subtle persuasion was the key.

To start with he supported St Kilda for a week, and when I asked him why he explained that because "I was a Carlton supporter -an Uncle "Essendon*", Grandad "Port", another uncle "Adelaide" etc etc that there was no-one else to pick. The poor bugger thought that the all the other clubs were taken!

It's now too ingrained to change. He knows the list, the rookie list, checks Northern Blues updates, IAmCarlton APP, keeps a goalkicking spreadsheet, even reads TC when I'm not on it. Might start blaming him for any rubbish posts I fire off.

You prepare yourself for the day it changes, but it's the father/son thing that he knows would never be the same if he did. Memberships, merchandise, etc is a great way to get them in (ie bribery) to start with.

If the first problem is getting them interested in football to start with I suggest buying a magnetic Premiership ladder, as well as collecting football cards, and of course the always reliable backyard kick to kick.

As they get older family tipping comps, and Supercoach/Dreamteam will suck them in. Dont expect them to sit down and watch entire games with you from start to finish from the age of 2.

I think that's the most parenting advice I've ever given!

....oh, have a daughter as well. She has a Juddy badge, and takes photos at games to keep herself amused. Like having a wife that "only likes 20-20 cricket, but thinks tests are boring", you just take what you can.....!

Yeah, the whole "little brother" ting works for me.

The general ignorance of WCE supporters makes it pretty easy a well.

and Freo is a bit more "real", I mean what the flower does the West Coast stand for?

May as well have called the the Western Time Zones or something just as non-descript.

I reckon school is the key. Get em to grade 2 and i reckon it's a lock.

At the moment, I figured just stay overseas til the season's over. When we come back, eldest will still have the set of team coach cards to play with and will have at least 6 months until she asks me for a gold Travis cloke to complete her carlton 2013 set...

Until I moved back to the country 20 years ago I went every to the footy every week. And when my son was a little tacker I took him to a Carlton / Essendon* practice match at Sunshine.
Essendon* won. In the car on the way home he said he was going to follow Essendon*.
Hmm, what to do?
Told him that was no problem, but if he wanted to go to the footy each week with me, he'd be watching the Blues.
He is a staunch Carlton Man !!
My daughter followed North, Geelong, Melbourne or pretty much whoever this weeks Best Friend followed.
She started coming with me to PP. Now, I can say with pride ,she is Carlton's ''mandy''.
I buy my 4 grandkids a Carlton membership every year for Christmas.

Sneaky but effective.

I made a bet with the fiancée that whoever's club had won a flag closest to the birth gets club supporter bragging rights.

Mansfield for Chapman stuff :(

For me as a Kid, things changed in 1979 when I was 8yrs old.

I liked Nth Melbourne.

Then a group of friends made fun of me because they were all Carlton and i was all
alone as a Kangaroos supporter.

They told me I had to change to Carlton because Nth Melbourne are "Dumb".

And to this day, I remember watching the 1979 Grand Final on our colour TV, and
saying to my Dad, that if Carlton win, I'm going to start to barrack for Carlton.

The rest is history !

I was 7 when I started going for the blues in 1995. I had a family member get drafted that year and have never looked back.
It was tough going from the 99 prelim, losing the GF, then not even making the GF in 00, to the "Death Era"of 02-07.
All while I was copping flak from my Port and Crows mates. Then to make matters worse, my family member left the club and went to Essendon*!

I was getting asked, left, right and centre, if I was going to change clubs and follow Essendon*, now that Scotty left?

My answer has been and always will be, "Not in this lifetime".

I grew up while we were shit, and It breaks my heart to see the boys miss out this year. (Also why I took offence to Doc's comments in another thread)

There are a few key rules.

1. Don't allow them a choice. The difficulty you face is the missus is still a Saints fan, is she??
The lines like "if you want to go the footy with me, you barrack for Carlton" "if you want to live in this house"

2. Involve them in Carlton stuff. You'll have to endure the agony of Carlton family day in the early years.
Kids love Captain Carlton because he's like a superhero. If they waver take them to the Carlton shop and get a merchandise.
Always have a jumper in their size. If they get another team jumper as a present from relatives, it's for the bin or Salvos. Be firm on that.

3. Teach them about enemies. I have eliminated most options for my son by telling him that that team is our enemy. Kids love Good v Evil.

4. In my case, my son had to be 7 before he enjoyed actually watching the footy. Before that going to the footy meant plenty of snack and some junk food and flag waving.
Until they actually like watching the game, associate watching Carlton in their mind with eating yummy food.

She is but she's fine with it. Understands it's a father/son thing. It's her parents that have been dropping a few hints & even they haven't been too bad.

I have the luxury of having a wife that has no real interest in football. Luxury because:

1. My weekends at the football are 'wife free', and
2. She didnt support a club before we were married so she has adopted Carlton as her club (even though her support is limited at best)

Having 2 Carlton parents means our 2 girls have no choice. Easy!!

When our 10 year old asks me 'Why did we lose again?', my response to her is that it doesnt really matter because we werent really trying. She seems to buy that still. Mind you she still loves John Cena and thinks the WWE is real so not sure how long before I'll have to come up with something else to tell her.

Lil' Miss Wojee turns 14 in a couple of days and footy doesn't interest her in the slightest, she specifically asked me not to buy her a membership this year

Lil' Miss Wojee II (4 in a couple of months) on the other hand hasn't stopped singing "We are the Navy Blues" since we went to the Brisbane game. She's slept in her Carlton guernsey a few times since then, and has asked for the number 5 to be put on both it and her Carlton Beanie Bear's jumper.

My eldest stepkid is also turning 14 soon and is an Essendon* supporter, although he's not interested enough to watch them on TV (computer/iPad etc trumps footy) and hasn't been to a game this year. He does like being a member though.

My other stepkid was a Dogs supporter becauce her dad is a Dogs supporter, but since I've been with MW she's changed to Carlton and loves it when I take her to games. She also wants 5 on her jumper.

I haven't actively pushed Carlton onto any of the kids but it's been helpful that MW is only a nominal Essendon* fan. Thanks to me she know more about Carlton's players than she does Essendon*'s
