How do you sack a bloke from his job but let him know that he is a revered clubman who is always welcome at the club?

I think that Carlton probably does it better than most - see R Walls and A Jesaulenko

The day you hire a mate or a revered figure, is the day you know that one day you'll most probably have to sack them.

It's just the inverse to the good feeling we all get at the beginning, and totally unavoidable.

But there's a right way to do it.

Be generous. Don't quibble over the details. Let them choose the exit that suits them best. Give them good support post-sacking. If they've spent their life at the club, don't just cut them loose... Make sure there's still a connection there (I'd imagine he sacked coaches club is great for this).

As I recall they put Percy on the Board - but thats obviously not going to happen in this situation.

Why not? We could probably do with more board members

if it is business, then Freo's win yesterday made our loss on Saturday night academic.

if Ratts is sacked, it'll have nothing to do with business and all to do with egos

and if it happens, it will be a very poor reflection on the Board and Management at a time when they should come out and say he will coach out his contract

This line that Freos win erases our Gold Coast loss is staggeringly dumb. Unbelievable!

Good idea, Ratts would be ideally placed to head up the panel to select the next coach.

Keep him at the club by hiring him as kicking coach.

He couldn't kick far but he could kick straight.

Yeah but Ratts is a seer and knew Freo would win so he asked the players to play as shit as they could so that...

Yeah...the rest makes sense but this is the bit that I can't quite work out... :screwy:

If I was Ratts I wouldn't want to be hanging around. It'd be a bit like being the best man when your mate marries your ex.

And as for being a specialist coach I'd prefer we got someone who had their displayed excellence over the last few years rather than appoint someone because he played in a particular team and we feel bad about axing him from another job that didn't work out.

It is not a matter of keeping him around, but keeping the door open, it it happens.

He has bleed blue for the club, more than any of us, and that should never be forgotten.

Malcolm Blight was a disaster as a coach when he took on North Melbourne the first time (albeit as a playing coach) back in 1981.

Fast forward to Adelaide 1997 and he was a relevation.

Ratts time may not have come just yet.

Agree. Worst thing that he ever did was accept the job at his own club with limited experience. Needed to go and get some serious time under his belt at another club.
