I seem to remember a thread some time back where someone was able to explain the situation with moving our home ground to the 'G.

I had it in my head back then that we had to wait a couple more years before this might be possible. Does anyone know the current situation?

I think the deal we did was 10 years. Maybe takes us to 2014?

If possible I would love to see us play;
7x Home games at the MCG
4x Home games at Visy Park ideally against GWS, Port, GC, Freo

0x Home games at Etihad as I hate that stadium!

Come on make this happen!

Deal definitely takes us to 2014.

Any move is going to be subject to:
- the MCC apparently no longer wanting to deal with individual clubs, only the AFL
- Minimum match requirements at Etihad that reduce in 2014, but require the number of expected blockbusters at the stadium to remain the same

Taken from my blog: http://footybusiness.wordpress.com/stad ... ium-deals/

“the MCC had no say whether Carlton or any other club played more games at the ground because the AFL had struck its own deal with the MCC and the league did not want clubs making separate deals with the stadium” – Stephen Gough (CEO MCC)

Quote:
Etihad
• Tenant Clubs: Carlton, Essendon*, St Kilda, North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs

AFL fixturing and arrangements

• Ownership of the stadium is turned over to the AFLin 2025.
• Docklands is entitled to a final if there are two or more finals in the first week, otherwise they must be compensated with extra matches the following year.
• 46 games a year contracted until 2013, then 40 games a year until 2025
• best endeavor clause requires at least 30 games to have a potential crowd of at least 40,000 or more.
• Stadium returns for crowds of 40,000 are believed to be about half that of a similar crowd at the MCG.
• No third stadium can be built before 2025
• all clubs recieve a minimum 100k per home game.

Known Club arrangements

• Carlton contracted to play 6 games a year, deal ends in 2014. Etihad management trying to convince them to stay. Carlton recieved 2.5 million up front to move, however this has meant lower returns since. Carltons deal is apparently set to its gate reciepts.
• Essendon* contracted to play 7 games a year, deal ends in 2025. Widely reputed to be the best deal of the docklands clubs.
• St Kilda hasnt had a deal since 2008 and would like to play at the MCG.
• North Melbourne may not have had a deal at Docklands since 2007

I cannot understand why we play StKilda @ Shitihad whilst Richmond play Port @ the MCG.

WHY WHY WHY???????????

Seriously, Richmond will struggle to pull 40,000 to that game whilst we could have easilly gotten 60,000 plus had we played at the G.

Doesn't - Make - Sense?? ?

We didn't crack 60K last week vs the Bombers, no way would we get anywhere near that vs St Kilda when they're done for the season.

Love to see that happen!

Unfortunately it won't.

wrong wrong wrong, if we are playing for a spot in the finals we would get 60,000 at the G. Instead of the 45,000 at Etihad

There's got to be a good reason why we can't play at Visy anymore.
Can someone tell me what it is?

Especially after the AFL made us build a new Flowering grandstand to accommodate for all the matches we would be having there!

It would be awesome if we did get scheduled against GC and GWS at Visy next year, just to see the gnashing of teeth and wailing when some of the regulars realise that 50,000 into 5000 doesn't go.

Wasn't it their home game?
Reflecting more at their status then ours.

-What's the capacity at Visy? And would people really be short of a seat at the low drawing games? (GC, GWS, Brisbane, Port, etc). Also note that low supply and high demand means they can charge more. I'd pay double or triple to watch a game at Visy.
-There's plenty of parking within a 10 minute walk of the stadium.
-A tram line runs right past. Brunswick station isn't absurdly far away.
-Residents can cop it! And surely the council would love a chance to pull several thousand in parking fines the way they always used to

Also remember the enormous but less quantifiable benefit of playing at visy: renewed sense of identity and belonging.

As far as I'm concerned, the club sold a huge part of its soul the day we moved to docklands.
I know my family used to buy premium memberships back in the day, particularly valuing the social club aspect.
Dad stopped forking out when we moved to the hollow room. How could we feel any belonging or connection to the place?

After attending the pre-season game against North Melbourne, I'm glad that there are no AFL Home & Away games scheduled at visy park.

A great suburban venue it is, but an AFL standard one it is not.

Question answered - thanks everyone.

Personally, Docklands are easier for me to get to, but I'd still rather we played more games at the 'G. Just seems to suit us better.
