From Martin Flanagan's article in The Age this weekend ...
"The Dogs have a tradition whereby, after each game, the players rate their best teammate. The winner gets the match ball signed by all the other players. Liam Picken has won the match ball five teams this season, more than any other player. And so the son of a flamboyant footballer will be remembered for his selflessness and application."

I like the concept, but what value does a match ball have for a flogging? As much as a win like last night's? Something like Buckley winning Norm Smith in a losing Grand Final. What's the point of being named the best in a team of losers?

Look at the results Carlton have had this year. Does someone really deserve an award for being flogged by a team as universally shitful as Port? For giving it up against Essendon*? Got pantsed by Adelaide or North?

If "selflessness and application" are the criteria, I guess negators & defenders would get more votes? Happy to be proven wrong :smile:

Eddie has definitely improved in both areas. But it's a game by game award, & I'm not sure he'd win over Carrazzo or Brock in the latest round.

I get what you're saying KK, but think recognition for effort, even in a losing/flogged team is important. And, yes, I was a teacher ... can relate the story of my mum making medals out of milk top bottles for Little Aths in the late 60s if you want :razz:
Plus, it's just an internal club award from what I understand ...

I didn't mean to come across as too harsh, nor did I want to hijack your thread, so sorry if that happens. I also get what you're getting at, and yes, even in a losing team, application and effort for your teammates deserves recognition.

Don't really care what the physical representation is, but I like the idea of peer assessment after every game. It sounds very Leading Teams, so I wouldn't be surprised if we already have a similar method of assessment for the playing group. If we don't I reckon it'd be worth considering.
