Yes Justin Cordy has all the certificates and qualifications in the book and yes I'm just an armchair/keyboard warrior but I reckon our blokes aren't strong enough in the contests.

Are they too lean ?

Thoughts..........

This has been discussed a bit lately. I'm no expert either, but it does seem to me that Judd's arms aren't as big/muscular as they have been in the past.

No expert either, but watching the Pies/Adelaide game shows whats required.

Tyson Goldsack always looked like a stick to me. Have a look at the guy after he kicks the goal on Sat, he's RIPPED and got muscles sticking out everywhere.

I don't think so.. Scotland, Carrots, Gibbs, Tuohy, Duigan, Murphy, Gibbs, Joseph, Yarran, Laidler,Ellard, Armfield, Curnow are all well built..Judd has always been lean and Simmo will always be lean..nothing will change with Garlett.

We look like sticks, it was noticeable our limited physical stature, time for a Cartman diet.

Anyone with medical knowledge know if there's a link between shoulder injuries and physical size/bulk?

We seem very brittle. In fact, when teams like Hawthorn really run hard at us and try to hurt us, I shudder thinking of what's going to happen. With a group as experienced now as this one, it's not something we should have to worry about. Our players' nasty habit of injuring themselves for long periods just as they're coming into form is rather alarming, as is the ability of those left behind to cover that loss. But who is accountable for this?

Ask this question again at the end of the season, if we're still running strongly (not that we're showing much of that at the minute admittedly) and the 'heavier' teams start tiring or succumbing to soft tissue injuries then it'll be a masterstroke.
If not then we're too lean.

Who are the heavier teams? Crows? Dangerfield is 189cm 92kg -- that's top end..Scott Thompson 187, 86..
Carrazzo 187, 85 - Scotland 182, 82 - Murphy 180, 80, Gibbs 188, 85, Judd 189, 89..G.Ablett 182, 85..Pendelbury 191, 91 Sidebottom 180, 84

No where in these numbers can one suggest we are too lean.

To me it's all about momentum & attitude - playing "big".

The past few weeks where we have been smashed in the clinches it has been by teams with players charging into the contest and using their momentum to break through, while our guys have hung back waiting for the ball to fall into their hands. Robbo attacked the clinches for us yesterday - and he's not exactly beefcake either - and he ripped the game apart.

Simmo has always been one of the skinniest blokes in the team but you never really see him get outmuscled.

So yeah, maybe a few of the boys are a bit lean in the courage & desire department, but I don't think the bodies are that much of an issue.

Ironically, though, probably our beefiest midfielder is Brock McLEAN

Hmm - is it a fair argument to put forward the case that some players maybe holding back by way of subconsciously not having confidence in their bodies' ability to withstand heavy contact ?

Aside from that, we've been done over on numerous occasions in one on one contests of strength, which could also be a case of poor positioning and technique in the contest I suppose.

The conditioning may not be a direct result of Cordy's philosophy, but may be a reflection of what he's been requested to produce.

His qualifications don't do his cause any good either.

Essendon*: Was this in the Knights day's when they had a attacking game plan based on pace.?
Western Bulldogs: Was this in the Rodney Eade Days when they had an attacking game plan based on pace?
Cricket Australia: Apart from Andrew Simmons knocking over a streaker, how many collisions are these guys involved in.?

I really noticed this when I went to the West Coast game at Etihad last year. Tex was walking along the boundary line with Darling or Lynch (not sure...but it wasn't Cox before you ask) and, yes he was shorter, but by golly, the WCE player was just a behemoth next to him.

It is hard to put on additional size during the course of the year with the aerobic training and game time. Players are generally bigger in the first few rounds due to weight training in the off season, but our players tend not to be. Murphy is turning into a nugget, and JR is carrying a bit of weight, so it can be done, but needs to be directed to the right players. If t-bird was to on 5-10kg of lean muscle he would be quite the dangerous forward.

Dustin Fletcher, you would have thought 20 years in the system he would have some biceps.
Michael Tuck, Craig Bradley and Kevin Bartlett, none of these guys were big and went on to play some massive amount of games.
Simmo has played 150 straight...

Something about the skinny bloke who has the longevity.

According to a stats site - and I don't no if the weights of players is correct
the only two games we have been heavier than the opponents was Brisbane and GWS
we are usually 1-2 cm shorter as well

all others we have been 2 kg lighter accross the group and in the case of collingwood 5kg

But with the pies that could be just that Dane Swan is so fat :)
