Great article by Jolly.
Can see why Pagan didn’t work, poor list aside.
Let’s hope Ratten is in the Malthouse/Roos category of coaches.
If not, then you’d like to think Kernahan is smart enough to realise Malthouse and Roos are currently not coaching !!

Quote:
SOMEONE once said to me the best way to motivate a donkey to move in the direction you want it to is not to whack it with a stick but to entice it with a carrot.

Footballers aren't donkeys, but the same applies. I've had several coaches over my career. One chose the stick, the others the carrot.

...

I owe a lot to Roosy and the Swans. He gave me the confidence to turn into the player I am today. I remember a lot of the conversations I had with Roosy, but one in particular stands out that I had with him in round three of the 2005 season. I was pretty flat, playing ordinary footy and was focused on the mistakes I was making during games. He told me he didn't care if I made mistakes as long as I was having a crack. He spoke about confidence and how he would always give me the confidence to believe in my ability. His door was always open and he wanted me and all his players to come in and have a chat with him about anything.

In the five years I was there, Roosy hardly ever lost his temper during or after games, but would tell you constructively the things you didn't do well and what you needed to work on.

Players can put a lot of pressure on themselves and so it was truly inspiring to have a coach who would ease that pressure, give you the confidence to just play and not think about anything else and be constantly talking with his players and making sure he was up to date on how everyone was feeling.

There's no secret why the Swans were successful in those years. We didn't have a team full of superstars, we just had 22 guys with an extremely strong culture playing their hearts out for each other and a coach motivating them and leading them in the direction he wanted us to go.

Yes, but we need a great coach if we are to win a flag with our undersized list.....

I think Ratts would be a carrot man, he is no stranger to hard work. The problem appears to be his ability to think laterally on game day.....maybe even beyond that.

You could also ask "Do we need another thread?"

Wow didn't take long for a smart arsee comment, but I guess that's becoming true to form for this place

I thought it was a great read and worthy of a stand alone thread. Of course Brad would say I'm attention seeking lol

Did you study at the Brad School of Hard Knocks??

Just ignore them SC. I cop those every time I start a thread, (which admittedly isn't that often).
I never serve 'em up though. I reckon if you don't like, don't read. Besides which, everytime you respond to a thread
it freshens it's place on the list. Anyway. the way I look it, it'd be a pretty boring forum if no one came up with anything
other than pre and post match threads -- so good on you.

I reckon the person who came out the worst from that article was Jolly. Why on earth would you do a public
hatchet job on someone you haven't had anything to do with for years. Unless perhaps Eddie put him up to it to make
Collingwood and Buckley sound all good. Wouldn't put it past him.

Heard a discussion on this on 3AW on the weekend. Both Mick Malthouse & Leigh Matthews agreed that due to the high number of rotations during a game , positional changes have minimal impact on the day.

I feel that a lot of the criticism of Brett Ratten is due to supporters being bitterly disappointed after having high expectations from the three early wins including the flogging of Colonwood( I enjoyed typing those last three words).

IMHO we are not as good as we were portrayed in the media after 3 rounds. The bottomline is we are 5-3 after 8 which many would have found acceptable before the season commenced.

I feel that Ratten should be judged on the whole season and to call for his sacking at this stage to me is totally ludricrous. I am staggered that there are even posters on this site hoping that we loose against Melbourne & Port so that he is sacked sooner.

I have been a supporter of this club since 1966 and in my world a True Blue Carlton Supporter would never wish for the team to loose.

I accept that the jury is still out on wether Ratten is a good coach or not, but as a loyal long serving player & coach he at least deserves to see the season out.

The disappointment Noonamah is that since round 4 we haven't seen any change in the way we go about things at stoppages. Clubs are having success against us employing the same tactics Essendon* did back in round 4. Surely the coaches have had enough time to make some changes.

Whilst that is true I don't accept the theory that it is the total blame of the coaches. Are the players following their instructions?
Are there other factors involved that we are not aware of?? Is the problem coming from the club management or board??

Unless any of us have inside information, we are not in a position to just single out Brett Ratten as the total reason.

I am as bitterly disappointed and disheartened over the last month's performances as any other supporter. I just feel that to call for Rats sacking is a knee jerk reaction.

I don't say that I am right or wrong. These are just my opinions and deep felt feelings about the current situation that the club is in.

Give him time to turn the club around. If we have failed by seasons end , then make a decision on coaching.

mwah. xx thought I was dead alone thinking this.
In the pre season thread, I put that I'd be happy with 2 finals wins.
A lot of people put a flag or nothing.
Maybe most will be happy with a Top 4 place..maybe not.
I hear a lot of people's opinions in my day job. It seems many blues supporters feel Ratts time is up so we can get to the next level.
I'm holding on to hoping that he is the one there with Juddy holding the 17th cup.

Another thing..
I thought everyone was excited about our coaching panel.
Is no- one coming up with a lateral idea, or are they, but Ratts says no?
Or...are the players unwilling, or unable to execute quick lateral ideas during their game?
How can any of us know which it is? Why assume everything lies with Ratts?
Not saying it doesn't...but just something to think about.

So if we come out and beat Melbourne by 200 points, is everything rosey again?

I understand we need to be mindful of how we treat our own, however this also underlines why we are in our current predicament.

To have the jury still out after 5 years really says it all.... If the supporters second guess the coach how on earth can the players have faith in what he preaches?????

Our list spells out fast movement, pace, speed, skill, precision, flair....but no point having these skillsets if you cant win the contested ball. It's a basic though and I think the list current strengths is best in the league

Look we will get the clearance problem sorted out and we will be away. We know that teams are going to come after us physically now and we can use that knowledge to our advantage. Just antoher challenge to be overcome and we will.

In relation to the article, if I recall correctly Melbourne players were in tears during Danihers last game and played their guts out for him.

So in summary: Jolly you are a soft wanker.

watch from 6.30 onwards, won't often see players that sad for a coach after a mid season sacking
