Maybe this group of players aren't capable of displaying the composure and hardness required to win a flag ?

It seriously looks as though they're just expecting everything to fall in their laps this season. Not working hard enough for long enough.

I remember talking with David Parkin about the character of the '95 side and he mentioned regularly how critical the sacrificial acts were that made them such a tight group.

One in all in. It's not a problem where individuals are responsible.

It's a collective mindset I reckon and I think the players continually get protected or excused from sub standard efforts.

Ratten was a no bullshit player who went for the ball with no stuffing about. His players should follow suit.

Actually, it's not so much a physical softness, it's more mental and, at times, that manifests itself in a physical context. But the weakness appears to start above the shoulders.

Using the St Kilda/Essendon* games as examples...

Okay, they start fired up and get a jump on us at the start of the game. That's okay, that will happen. But why are we seemingly unable to raise our game/intensity for sustained periods to allow our (arguably) better talent to finish the job?

It's a problem that's been around for a while. But the time for excuses has passed. Now is a time for action.

It's not just about putting the head over the ball - it's about thinking clearly and decision making when heat is applied.

That might turn out to be the case. The flakyness is the big worry. Even our best players make one or two errors when the heats on and things fall apart.

On a brighter note we all know we can play better than we have of late and our line up can have much better mix.

Harden up Blue Boys !!

We are the new old Geelong. Lots of skill, pace, and flamboyance but when they game turns hard or requires some genuine toughness the handbags come out. Gibbs epitomises that type of footballer.

Depends on what line of thinking you have:

1. We are either talented enough but not dedicated/hard enough
2. We just don't 'have the cattle' and need to draft/recruit what is required

I have been saying it for a few years now and it is still my biggest concern.

We simply are not big enough around the core and across the shoulders etc. If you are lucky enough to get close to our players we are very lean and skinny through the legs. This has happened since we brought Cordy in. No doubt we are extremely fit but with the game becoming more and more about stoppages and contested ball we simply get brushed aside.

Stand next to players from Collingwood and Geelong they are man mountains compared to us and I saw some of the Essendon* players after the ANZAC clash and they have bulked up considerably and it has made a difference.

It is fine to have those type players we have but we need size as well. Our toughest player is Robinson and he is a whippet. My concern is that if he keeps going this way his career will be over by the time he is 25.

More than anything I believe this is our biggest problem. The players are having a go but simply can't compete on an equal level.

Well if your gameplan is solely based around speed then the conditioning aspect reflects that....maybe we need to tinker with the game plan just a touch....

The mostly crap form of Garlett since Round 3 symbolises the fall from grace of our team as a whole... He's playing like a lazy millionaire who thinks his poo doesnt stink, and is forgetting the hard work that got him a reputation as one of the best small forwards in the game. He is a shadow of his former self this year.. He needs to get rid of those God awful silly flashy boots, and stop thinking he's it and a bit, because his form barely warrants selection in the Seniors at the moment. The same goes for Bryce Gibbs!!

Blaming the boots?

And Geelong were flaky and soft before they surprised everyone to win the 2007 flag. They hadn't delivered with poor finals performances. The recruitment of Ottens was bagged more than Gibbs. Not saying we'll win as many as Geelong, but it's round seven.

No offence, but sheep think we lack bulk. Nothing huge about the likes of Colyer, Jetta, Zaharakis, Howlett, Lonergan, Stanton, Heppell, Melksham and Davey. Latest fad is being weaponised.

Desire isn't related to size. Look at Ellard who made a mockery of Garlett being a star.

Yep.......agree with all of that; but the blame should really be spread far and wide.

It seemed obvious to me in the first 10-15 minutes last night that they weren't ''switched on''.

A huge percentage and top of the ladder at stake meant nothing..........why?

Yes; I know we lost only 2 games in '95; but this side aint no '95 side....nowhere near it.

I couldn't believe how many times we actually mounted an attacking venture from defence; only to kick it to a St.Kilda player all by himself.....or handballed to a team mate who was under huge pressure, leading to yet another turnover.....WTF?...........anyway......
