One of the many things that I'm pleased about this year is the subdued response of our players to goals or great plays during games.

Our Mexican friend BS reminded me of this in a post on Zach Tuohy, who after his great 50 metre set shot goal on Friday night, just slappped a few hands and went back to business. Geez I like this boy.

I've always hated players carrying on like they've just kicked the winning goal after the siren. A bit of excitement and acknowledgement is fine, but keep it low level boys. By all means acknowledge, support and congratulate each other but keep it cool.

We are doing it better than anyone else at the moment.

Juddy has always led with this, and I think it's flowing over to the rest of the team. Even after something miraculous he just gives himself a subdued fist pump or arm raise. It's cool, professional, and just says to the opposition, yeah we do that all the time.

Murph similarly, a great goal, but just a raised finger, a steady jog back to the middle, and a contented grin.

Even the excitable Eddie only goes with a restrained gangsta rapper double handed finger posture thingo.

Big Hammer was probably the most excited after a goal on Friday night with a jump for joy and raised arms, but probably fair enough in his circumstances.

Over-celebrating might be fine in European soccer where a single goal will often win a match. But really, is there any need for it in AFL. Its un-Australian anyway.

Think of some of the WANKSTAINS (new compulsory word from missnaut) from other teams in this regard. Travis Cloke with his his double biceps flex, neck extended, and screaming at the heavens. Jarryd Roughhead - thank god he was out last year - who goes completely off his nut when he goals from 2 metres from a joe the goose handball. Kyle Reimers, bloody hell, who sprints around the boundary with his mouth open pretending he's an aeroplane. Justin Sherman, Lindsay Thomas, Angus Monfries, Michael Hurley. In fact its endemic at Essendon*, they are probably the worst.

I know in some circumstances the excessive celebration can be an attempt to intimidate the opposition.

But we are better than that. The Cool Blues. Understated Superiority. Keep up the good work boys. Leave it to us fans to go beserk.

Glad you mentioned Roughhead, he looks plain stupid when he kicks a goal

I've noticed this since late last year and I commented after Friday night that we were very cool, especially after the siren.

This combined with not needing rev ups from the cleaner (or whoever that dude
was) before the game to get us playing the right way.

Robin Nahas, celebrates getting a kick like a show pony, his goal celebrations are beyond imagination and way over the top.

The footage of Richmond singing the song (like they had won the premiership) after beating MELBOURNE of all teams was embarrasing. It's good to celebrate, it's another thing to carry on like drunken teenagers. The Blues have done well to show that they are williing to take the next step. We still have a long way to go. Ten years lost a lot of respect...

What does "un-Australian" mean?

Here's a bit of the response I got at Bomberblitz....

[No1Blue] Go the mighty Blue baggers!!!

If you guys can keep the score to under 6 goals win for the blues you've done OK. Far from a top class team you guys have at least another 2 or 3 years to go till you reach that level... You need a deeper midfield to be able to challenge the big boys.

I admire your fight though, but fight doesn't equal talent... To almost go down to the Suns and expect to beat a premiership contender is ambitious to say the least....

Good luck boys (and girls) smoke.gif

[nickyd] Are you for real another Carlton Flog on here.

[takeover target] EAT A DICK!!!

[bdstratton] someone ban this troll!

Love it ;)

Not really sure what the point of trolling opposition forums is.

When they rightfully ban you I guess you'll wear that as a badge of honour?

I think that subdued response is also evident in Rats... It is keeping the lid on , the team focussed.
Didn't panic during the preseason flak, does go over the top after a big win.. Comes across as professional

About as much point as McGuire, Malthouse et al trolling each other in the media.

Let's not get holier than thou because remember at the end of the day we're all mates.

In the Australian context it usually means you don't vote for the coalition.

In the Inuit context it usually means you're Inuit.

Presumably that means it's un-Australian to have an Eskimo pie without sauce?

To me the 'keeping a lid on it factor' looks like it's coming naturally - and not forced - which means that the side genuinely believe in what they are preaching rather than it being a directive from above that they are struggling to follow.
