...we lost to the Lions at the Gabba by 117pts.

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php? ... 16%2C+2007

It was Pagan's last game as coach.

Last night was Ratten's 100th game in the top job and while it hasn't always been smooth sailing for him I hope he has the chance to have a quiet moment to reflect and really enjoy last night's result.

Similarly, let's hope the nine players to take the field in both games also enjoy a quiet moment of reflection. And that it further motivates them for the continuing journey.

Great post CB. Pertinent juxtaposition. We've come a long way and isn't it grand. Hopefully we're even prouder in 175 days.

Was reflecting on that as well and remembering that Brisbane also delivered the fatal blow to another favourite son Robert Walls' Carlton coaching career - thus I didn't have one ounce of sympathy for Vossys mob.

Ratts is heading up a big FD, much healthier than Pagan had, and I'm sure he's relishing the challenge

Seeing the press having less and less influence and watching these high scoring games with long kicking to a contested situation I couldnt help but think was Dennis Pagan ahead of the times

DP didn't have the playing talent at the time or the support from within or the cash when the ship was quickly sinking.

no issue with that - however the decision to gut the 22-28 yo range of the list he acquired (leading to smashings and then recycled player path) and the recruitment of MM from north for his 300'th game will always rankle me

This isn't meant to be a Pagan-bashing exercise, rather a small pause for reflection, on the way to a greater destination, so we don't forget we've come from.

Not sure I'll forget the 10 goal smashings every second week

That's an exaggeration!

But it was a 10 goal + loss for every win or draw.... Ouch

Hmm you're right, only a 10+ goal flogging every 4 weeks, mixed in amongst the other 70+ losses in 6 seasons
I feel so much better now, I've been carrying unwarranted grief all this time..

So was it true some players didn't want to get on the plane that day? Carlos on Jono Brown was a tethered goat. Remember the day well, very nasty.

A day I'll never forget. The sense of anger at what I was seeing.

Maybe that's why I relish each win so much these days.

Was mentionuing this exact same thing to my mate while watching the game last night..
Having gone through thumping after thumping in the Dark Years makes us appreciate every win and the fantastic way we re playing now a lot more.
No longer do Carlton supporters just take winning for granted.

How many 100+ point thumping's were we on the receiving end before DP arrived? I know Pagan had 6 and Britts had 1.

I'm surprised at how few 100pt thrashings we really had. Felt like a couple a month back then.

Also amazing how many of our current team were part of that game also. Tell me they didn't enjoy themselves the other night.

Why did the ship right itself after Pagan left?

If Pagan was still coach, Carlton would still be bottom 4 and Chris Judd would never have come to Carlton.

Post subject:  Re: 1726 days ago...

Club culture is the intangible and magic ingredient that is necessary for premierships at Carlton

The simple fact is that Ratten offered this, but Pagan was set in his ways

He couldnt and wouldnt bring this to the club and because of this, was never going to be the right fit.

Add a solid, competent coaching performance plus a well managed list of high draft picks to this - and multiple premierships will result.

Now, we may well be on a worldline for back to back flags.

Pagans zenith was in 2004 with the foreign legion. It was a downhill run from that point on really..
