James is the son of Frank Marchesani, who played 36 games for the Blues.

He might earn more money playing golf! Well done James.

I hope his sporting career is more fulfilling than his dad's

Frank was on a hiding to nothing when he came to the Blues - we were on fire as a team, when we slid down as a team, he got glandular fever

Poor bugger

Speaking of one that got away...

At the same time Carlton got Kernas, Motts, Braddles & Nales, they were also very close to getting a bloke called Garry McIntosh.

This bloke was as tough as nails, and could play....Would've been great to see him run out in the CFC jumper.

Didnt we also have 'The Rat' John Platten all but signed up before the Hawks pinched him from under our noses ?

Heard something along those lines.

If it did happen, it was probably our turn to get one pinched from us. Fair sure the Bombers had Craig Bradley all sewn up in a deal until we swooped. They were also trying to 'woo' Kernahan too until big Jack went over to his house with a big bag of money.

Someone closer to the club than me can correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the Platten issue was that we had paid him money and he signed a contract to be tied to us for a period of time (was it a form 4 in those days?) I am told that Platten accepted our money but also accepted $$$ from Hawthorn to stay in SA until our deal had expired. He then signed with Hawthorn. If what I have been told is correct then you would have to wonder about the blokes ethics.

I think we gave him a car (Commodore) which he kept. Brereton loves telling this story. No surprise he was attracted to Hawthorn.

Hey mols.........surprised that the Beast's story on the CFC site featuring Serge and cousin John Benetti, didn't mention that Benetti as a Builder/Concreter did all of the terracing in the outer at PP.

Platten had signed to play with both clubs, but I think you may be right about the Form 4 with the Hawks was still valid and hadnt expired so we missed our man

We did well with players from other clubs in the 80's which had either originally signed or zoned to other clubs;

Bradley - Essendon*
Motley - Swans
Naley - Swans
Alvin - Footscray (and nearly got Brian Royal)
Gleeson - Fitzroy (30K in a paperbag allegedly got that deal done)
Ian Herman - St Kilda
David Honybun - Geelong
Ian Muller - Footscray
Fraser Murphy - Geelong, he was training with us and then we swapped him for Greg Williams (OK we buggered up on that one)

We also had Pies premiership player Scott Russell & Fitzroy's Jason Baldwin play with Carlton's U/16's in 1986 - somehow we never managed to hold onto these two.

All part of the plan.

We ended up with 2 premiership players. What did Geelong and Sydney get?

Jezza was supposed to go to North IIR. Apparently the story goes something like:
The North officials went to his house to sign him up but there was nobody home. They slipped a letter or the form 4 under his door but it also went under the rug/carpet/doormat on the other side of the door and he didn't find it until after he'd signed with us, which was presumably pretty soon afterwards.

Someone will have the true story I am sure of mine is wrong.

And apparently we were supposed to get Goddard and Wells but something happened to prevent it.....

Have heard something like that before. Extremely hard luck on North's part.

Terry Bartel

He was first invited to come down to Carlton as 17 year old in 1966. But he abandoned his first stint at Carlton soon after his arrival. Carlton officials made the trip to Beechworth with a wad of notes to entice him to return at the end of 1971. He did and impressed Coach Barassi. During the summer he played cricket for Melbourne on Saturdays and footy practice matches with the Blues on Sundays. But then Bartel was gone. Bartel did go back to Carlton, but he struggled to settle. He played a handful of games in the Blues' reserves before turning up back at Wangaratta Rovers where he kicked 6 goals in their winning 1972 Grand Final side.

Terry died last year of a brain tumor which spread down through his spine and torso. He put his failure to settle in Melbourne down to loneliness. Had he had the support - who knows what could have been made of his career during some halcyon days. His son James is currently a pretty handy footballer as well.

Barry Cable

Carlton had signed Cable as a 19 year old in 1964, the same year he won the Sandover Medal for Perth. However he never made the trip. Needless to say, he would have been handy.

Great insight Doc, especially on Bartel.

If only we had Jimmy
