My daughter challenged me to write a musical tribute to each of the delistees this year, so here goes.
Hoops was pretty easy once I decided to use the Roy Orbison tune Cryin':
Ry-ay-ay-ay-an Houlihan Ry-ay-ay-ay-an Houlihan
I think the game Has gone past you But it’s true-ue, so true That we need some more Of what you brou-ought before But Ryan, what could we do-oo-oo-oo? Since you did your knee, You’ll never be The same old Ryan, Ryan, Ryan
Ry-ay-ay-ay-an Houlihan Ry-ay-ay-ay-an Houlihan
Now that you’re gone From this moment on, We’ll miss you Ryan,
Ry-ay-ay-ay-an Houlihan Ry-ay-ay-ay-an Houlihan …
Austin was a bit harder given his lack of senior service, my first thought was a pretty harsh variant on the "Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi" chant, my second "Come On Aussie C'Mon", so in the end I combined them, hope it doesn't come across as harsh:
Juddy's getting kicks like a machine Yarran’s leaving scorch marks ’çross the green Eddie’s kicking great goals And Hammer’s clearing phone poles And Robbo’s' eyes have got that killer gleam Mr Walker's playing havoc with their backs Kreuzer, it's good to see you back With Armie's slashing runs We’ve got the pace that stuns But our tall defenders ought to get the axe
Come on Aussie C’mon C’mon Come on Aussie C’mon
Duigan has fitted like a glove And Laidler you’ve simply got to love Simmo’s slim but such a fighter So’s Garlett, though he’s lighter And Gibbs is sublimely gifted from above Carrots is in there for some grunt Tbird has settled in up front Waite can’t get and stay fit The young guys are not ready yet So were missing big defenders to be blunt
Come on Aussie C’mon C’mon Come on Aussie C’mon
Warnock is holding down the ruck And Tuohy has got the Irish pluck Hendo‘s showing signs down back And Jammo he’s nobody’s hack But with injury they’re having no great luck Scooter, the veteran is flying And Ajay is really in there trying Davies, McInness and White All too young or too short or too light The Blues fans with one voice are crying
Come on Aussie C’mon C’mon Come on Aussie C’mon
But sadly now it has come to pass Carlton have given Aussie-boy the arse The Blues can’t now turn to him To bolster ranks when they’re thin So now the song is of a different class
Aussie Aussie Aussie Bye Bye Bye Aussie Bye Aussie Bye Aussie Aussie Aussie Bye Bye Bye
I wasn't sure how to approach Setatnta, some Irish music perhaps, but then I happened across a website that tries to explain the lyrics to Don McLean's American Pie" and it occurred to me that if the song isn't about Carlos it ought to be. A little tweaking later, and
It wasn’t all that long ago I can sure remember how the big lug used to make me smile And I knew that if he took his chance He would make opponents dance And that thought kept me happy for a while
But trade week’s silence made me shiver At the message they might soon deliver Bad news at his doorstep He wouldn’t be there for the next step I remember clearly what I cried “What about his passion and his pride?” Something touched me deep inside The day they committed Setanta-cide
So, bye-bye tall dark and Irish guy You took the long trip to Australia To give our game a try You wore the Navy Blue with honour, passion and pride I hope the draft finds you another side.
I know a girl who loves the Blues And I asked her how she took the news But she just frowned and turned away And I went down to the Carlton store Where I’d bought his badges years before But the man there said they’d boxed them all away
And in Lygon Street some Blues fans screamed Whilst some were saddened others dreamed Of premierships that are surely on the way
Now whilst it’s the three men I admire most The president, list manager and coach Who chose to relieve you from your post, I still call it Setanta-cide.
So, bye-bye tall dark and Irish guy You took the long trip to Australia To give our game a try You wore the Navy Blue with honour, passion and pride I hope the draft finds you another side.
