BRETT Ratten has overlooked premiership teammate Peter Dean as coach of Carlton’s VFL affiliate the Northern Bullants, handing the role to Vic Country mentor Robert Hyde yesterday.

The Blues coach asked Hyde, 56, to apply on the back of 30 years’ experience punctuated by three TAC Cup premierships from five grand finals and a knack of nurturing young talent.

Has a pretty good coaching record at U18 level so a pretty good choice it seems as someone to help our next generation develop. Welcome aboard

(would've been happy with Deano too, but given he's a 95 premiership player it would just be another token appointment for a mate)

What a great get

Wonderful, wonderful selection. Cracking person for the job.

Do yourself a favour and get out and listen to him speak at the breaks. He's a ripper who will become a huge asset for the kids development.

I am staggered and disappointed by this.

Where was this guy when Peter Dean, Kouta, Michael Sexton etc were running around winning a flag in 1995???

What an un-mateship-like appointment.

Terrific record with junior footballers. Looks to be a fantastic appointment. Curious exactly how this fits together with the development portfolio of Harris? If it's a full-time appointment, does that mean he works under Harris, or alongside Harris?

Never heard of the guy before 10min ago, but it sounds like a good appointment.

How different is this setup to a stand-alone team anyway??

Good bloke. Would have been a great appointment 10 years ago.
Should have looked at someone younger.

I think he played for the "Filth" in the drawn Grand Final in 1977 - and then might have also played with the "Scum" as well.

He had been in the junior system for quite some time - so it might be that the tack the Northern Blues will be taking is giving younger players a go rather than recruiting suburban hacks.

The VFL regulars for Northern were hardly hacks. Our injury toll saw a few seep in towards the end of the season though.

He did play for Collingwood, was a good player who's career was cut short due to injury. Came from the Greensborough area and has been coaching for decades. Has a good reputation.

I think his normal day job is Principle at a Secondary School. But don't quote me on that.
