Andrew McKay to join Carlton

Quote:
McKay has been working with the AFL for the last seven years and brings outstanding credentials to this role.

He has been the AFL Game Development Manager for the last three years as well as a member of the AFL Laws of the Game Committee and the Tribunal Review Committee. Previously he had been a member of the AFL Match Review Panel, including three years as Chairman.

“In his current role at the AFL Andrew has worked closely with all clubs. He has liaised with the Football Departments at each club, meeting the coaches, player leadership groups, medical teams and the high performance staff as part of his role as Game Analysis Manager,” Greg Swann said.

Why is he just a friend ? He has been working in the AFL system for 7 years.

Plus he brings a bit of passion for the Carlton Football Club when he is speaking to players about extending their contracts. Nothing wrong with that.....

Good appointment I reckon...... Looking forward to see what he can do.

I guess when you piss off your previous footy operations manager before trade week because you're not getting along, being mates looks like it needs to be part of the deal

His previous job could've been as president of the USA, but it wouldn't matter because if "former Carlton player" is also part of his resume, then he must only be getting the job because of that.

cross breeding is important.

if this happened in govt it would be cronyism.

The Vet, welcome home!

One of my favourites back when he played.

In corporate life a lot of good appointments are made with "the tap on the shoulder".

I think Andrew Mackay's qualities for the position and experience with his role at the AFL gives him unique expertise for the role.

However the Senior Management at Carlton now is starting to read like a who's who of the 1995 Premiership team:

President: Sticks
Coach: Ratts
GM Football Ops: The Vet

CEO: Should Greg Swann start worrying???

Andy McKay is a smart guy and great ex Carlton man, but one wonders whether being ex Carlton (esp a team mate of Ratts) is the main criteria. This job should be independant and reporting to the board. You want him to be on the same page as the coach but not too cosy. If things go bad he may be needed to sound out alternate coaches behind Ratts back. Not good but its what happens. He has worked at the AFL but not in this sort of club role. Also what about his vet practice? Is he giving that up? That would be a big call. Surely this is not a part time job. Andy McKay on many levels should be a great appointment but its hard not to feel that Ratts is a great politician and the club is looking inward not outward. Hopefully Andy won't let friendship get in the way of tough calls in the future....but he and Michael Sexton would be the two most likely guys from the 95 flag. Swanny better watch out. Brad Pearce for CEO anyone?

I was thinking that was more Clape's role.

All else being equal, I'd take a Carlton man over anyone else. I have no reason to believe that McKay isn't the equal of anyone else we could've snared for this role.

Who's to say that love for the club doesn't make a man put in the extra 5-10% that might separate his performance from that of his alternatives?
