Post subject: | The 1993 Grand Final Fax Debacle |
A little bit more information about the infamous Neale Daniher Fax before the 1993 Grand Final has come out over the last week. It is a fascinating story. Neale Daniher had been studying our centre square set-up during the season and the week before the 1993 Grand Final he sent a fax to the Essendon* Football club letting them know what Carlton did. As Parkin has said, at the centre bounce Williams would basically take two players (his tagger and someone else), and the plan was for Harry to tap the ball down to the other Carlton players in a set rotation. Parkin said he was surprised no-one picked it up earlier and that he had been using it for several years. Anyway, when sending the fax Daniher punched in the wrong number and by chance it fell into the lap of a Carlton supporter. Daniher found out and threatened legal action against the supporter if he told the CFC about the fax. The supporter never told the club. On the day of the game Essendon* had the first 6 or so centre clearances and the game was as good as over early on. Apparently on the Monday after the GF loss this supporter rang Parkin and insisted they meet for a chat. As you could imagine Parkin was in no mood for this type of thing but eventually agreed to meet the guy. Parkin said they met in the social club and the supporter salved his guilt and told the whole story, apparently the supporter was close to tears when telling him. Needless to say Parkin was pretty stunned. It is an amazing turn of events. Still some questions though. Who is the supporter? Does anyone know? And what would you have done in the same situation? |

The main point of the story is that Carlton was able to use Harry Madden to great effect for nearly 15 years - and at 6 foot 10 inches tall would be guaranteed to give us first use of the ball. Madden had never adequately been replaced (albeit very briefly during Allan's stellar 1999 season which resulted in us making a Grand Final) and we have struggled severely without a class ruckman. There have always been a few things that Carlton have never gone without in the times I have been following them (from about 1968) and that is a class Ruckman and a rock solid Key Defender. |

Um.....gee...you've left out one thing that was mentioned during the week. Parkin, on WLF, didn't say that Daniher threatened legal action, rather he said the Carlton supporter who received the fax erroneously was told "he would have his throat cut"!!!!! Yikes! ![]() |

I would have told Parkin. Daniher made the mistake and if this supporter was true blue he would have had to tell Parkin. That day was one of the lowest days of my life and i still remember it as if it was yesterday. I would have definitely told Parkin. He could have set the hounds of the baskervilles or the mafia onto me - i still would have told Parkin. Wallis is never to be forgiven for what he did in that match and later in his career - he was an animal. Nothing short of an animal. |

It's a tricky one, my immediate thought is to have passed the info on to the club. What I'd like to know is how did Daniher discover the identity of the recipient? It is an amazing story though. |

Not even close. It would have been at the club in a flash. If Daniher cant dial a phone number correctly or deliver the letter in person thats his problem. Isnt it funny. The version I heard 10 years ago was that Rod Ashman got a letter from a supporter outlining Essendons plans and only found it on his desk after the game cos he disregarded it when he first got it. Anyway we had Athorn Powell and Scholl on the field and Kouta Dean and Doratich in the stands. When Wallis knocked over Mil, not one Carlton player came to remonstrate. Dora would have at least punched him in the face seeing it was his last season |

TRUE STORY- I had some inside info re Geelong and a couple of starting positions and conatcted Parkin the night before the game, a certain Carlton player started out of position due to my "info". I got a thank you from Parko at the dionner that night, a sip from the premiership cup and a picture of me with the cup for that! |

Sheedy could have given us a video of all training sessions and team meetings they had that week and they still would have pulled our pants down that day. |

Gotta disagree. People assume that because our bottom 4 players were worse than Essendon*'s bottom 4 players then we deserved to lose. Our top 6 players were far better than Essendon*'s top six players and if they were allowed to play to their potential we would have won. eg greg williams was clobbered and punched by denham every time he went near the ball - if the umpires were in control they would have given williams his fare share of 50 metre penalties. eg mil hanna - if he hadn't be taken out of the game by Dean Wallis who knows what kind of impact he would have had. Please keep in mind that Wallis a few years after 93 deliberately kneed Craig Turley testicles so hard that they bled. This is not the mark of a footballer - it is the mark of an animal...and nothing will persuade me to believe Essendon* justly won that grand final. Oh... by the way. Wallis wasn't suspended or even reported for that action. Some things never change regarding the tribunal and Essendon*. |

'93 was definitely winnable but unlike '95 we lacked a fully rounded team: B: Ratten, Silvagni, McKay HB: Christou, Sexton, Hanna C: Sholl, Williams, Brown HF: Alvin, Spalding, Powell F: Welsh, Kernahan, Heaver Foll: Madden, Bradley, Gleeson Int: Athorn, Hogg In 95: Kouta, Dean, Whitehead, Clape, Pearce, Camporeale, Rice, Manton Out: Sholl, Alvin*, Powell, Welsh, Heaver, Gleeson*, Athorn *played in '87 premiership. We would've been lucky to snare the premiership with a team containing Sholl, Powell, Welsh, Heaver and Athorn. Replacing them and the aging Alvin and Gleeson with the players we did was all we needed to take the extra step. |

A Mate's 21st was the night of the '93 GF. He's a mad Blues supporter and had navy balloons decorating the venue. Those black and red pricks made what could have been a fantastic night a slightly less fantastic night. I'll never forgive them for that. |
