Was that the appeal case that lead to the AFL Tribunal getting their own medical, human movement experts etc on side because they were made to look stupid by Hamill's defence team including their own expert

Loved Hamill as a player when he was with us and gutted by his defection (as most were). His consideration of himself as a Carlton man is interesting.

Sadly for him, neither club probably has a strong attraction to him as he left both in ordinary circumstances. Ours is well documented, but he apparently left the Saints demanding a wad of unpaid cash and having cost them a packet for 90-odd games anyway.

He played roughly the same number of games for us and them, but his pay packet was well apart for the respective clubs...

One thing I'll never forget will be the sight of Col Kinnear dragging him away from the camera after he thanked the club "for putting such a good story together" to get him off that charge

This seed barracked for Carlton, was given the great no. 4 had Carlton move heaven & earth to have him play in the 99 GF & still bailed on us.

He has never been welcome back & never will. Judas!!!!

I don't blame him for leaving Carlton anymore.

I think the blame is with Elliot. His signing was botched during the season and then when the Saints came with double his salary, we couldn't match it. We were way over the salary cap also. Who knows what Elliot offered him behind closed doors.

I think he'll look back and regret that he left but he probably set himself up financially and got out of a club that imploded 2 years later.

I've always thought that the Elliott story was a cover for him simply taking a huge offer that Carlton could never match. In the end he became a caricature of himself, running around making angry faces and bumping into people.

Another Jack Elliot triumph!

Loved him at Carlton and (to borrow from another thread) I also enjoyed watching him at the Saints. Sure I wanted him with us, in fact I always thought he'd come back, but he was a brilliant player.

He would be a sensation if he was starting his career with us now.

A bit of revisionist history here

I am by no means a fan of Black Jack he brought our great club to its knees but gets a bum rap over the hamill defection - gets unfaily demonised

Black Jake went to huge lengths to get him off charge

Hamill left simply for money - wanted to be paid considerably more than the players who were top 5 in our best and fairest at the time - was unduly influenced by manager Allison (a viper)

Wouldnt admit that he left for the money and thats what drew the supporters ire -said it had nothing to do with money moving to Stkilda but went there because of better culture etc

Even Parkin and Brittain supported the clubs position and Elliott on hamill and said he went for money

Ironically played more finals at blues than aints
Even more ironically advocated younger aints players to take pay cuts to stay under salary cap but never wanted to take one himself
Enduring memory when Blight got sacked of hamill sitting in the stands almost crying because he had come to a rabble

I barracked hard for the bloke in his early days. When he had bad form patches and the carlton crowd were getting stuck into him i always stood up for him and supported him.
Then he turned on me and left for money.

I recall he kicked 7 and 4 in his last 2 games for the blues. Never matched that for the saints. All he did was bump blokes. He was the most expensive Dean Wallis clone going around.

From 2000 onwards the player culture at Carlton was sick. The priority was money with a lot of players. Hamill wasn't the only player focused more on his wallet than the teams success. I think things started to change when Lance was shown the door and I'm confident now that the culture of team success as the priority has returned.

agree Rexy it was sick and elliott admin was a large contributor to that but if you pay a guy like hamill more than a champion like sos bradley etc - the culture would have been worse

A lazy, bloated, arrogant administration who's management sent us to the bottom, a culture that's taken the best part of 5 years to finally get some semblence of professionalism.

I too was bitterly disappointed when he left and never forgave him. My disappointment would have been assuaged if we had picked up a superstar in with the pick we got but Livo never went on. 2000 draft was about the worst in history and it was the one where we had three first rounders of whom Wiggo was the best!!!

I think we made a rod for our own backs by giving in to player demands. This was the first time we were strong. We should have stood up earlier to David Allison managed players like Matty Allen. Still I think Hamill made a mistake. Now he hasn't played 100 games anywhere and belongs to neither club, and he didin't win a flag or play in a GF with the Saints. He could/would have been Carlton captain and over the journey the difference in money wasn't that great, certainly not the absurd money being thrown at Callan Ward. Hamill probably made a few 100k more, half that would go in tax and being a man of no club now the benefits of a long career with the Blues are denied him in retirement. And if you can't set yourself up on the money he would have got with the Blues a few extra k at the Saints wouldn't have mattered. It may have balanced out in the end as he would have been captain of a side with the worst list and in his last couple of years when most of the silly contracts had finished he would have got some largesse from our salary cap room and perhaps a future career beyond footy. There is much more benefit to being a one club man at one of the big clubs than the extra dollars he got. The GWS money would be harder to say no to. Callan Ward is getting about 150% more than he is worth not 20%.
