He was pretty adamant, arrogant about it actually

Never have been quite sure what 'bats deeper' means. I think it means they have more than us, but does it also mean quality? I mean, I don't consider Armfield to be a midfielder just yet (though it seems club are developing him that way), but I'd take him over Xavier Ellis in a heartbeat, for hardness, dash, and upside. Now I might not know the Hawks players as well as some, so pls fellow TCers feel free to adjust this list, but here's how I see the two midfield groups stacking up and in my view they are pretty much equal all up...

ELITE
Judd Hodge
Murphy

VERY GOOD
Scotland Mitchell
(soon to be) Gibbs Burgoyne

GRUNT
Carrazzo Lewis
Robinson Sewell
Curnow Ladson
Ellard
Mclean ??

RUN
Simpson Young
Bateman

UP AND COMING KIDS
Lucas Savage
Armfield Shiels
Collins Smith

TALLS WHO CAN PLAY MIDFIELD
Kruezer as RR Franklin

X FACTOR
Rioli

MORE FWD THAN TRUE MID
Houlihan Osborne

brereton has truly lost the plot... did he say he thought lewis was an A grader?? , a slow turnover merchant... there midfield bats about as deep as the west indies without chris gayle, there is mitchell then there is hodge and rioli occasionally

He might be correct, but we are playing well as a team, that's what counts

a more rational person would have found argument
for either midfield.........!

Dermie is entitled to his opinion.
5 time day, 5 time night.

He is loyal to his club.

I'd be pissed off if Wayne Johnston or Jimmy Buckley didn't say the same thing about the carlton midfield.

Garlett?
Yarran?
Russell?
Walker?

They can all run through the middle if needed.

For him to come out with this shows he clearly thinks we are a threat. Previously he wouldn`t even bother comparing us to his precious Hawks. So many commentators can`t get past their personal bias to give an honest assessment.
He`s about to discuss again on SEN.

Hodge is a quality player but he is yet to become a reliable consistent midfielder. He body doesnt stand up to the rigours and his endurance is questionable.
He may be an A grade player but he's a B grade mid.

Mitchell however is definitely A grade. He is an elite user of the ball.

I think some of the botox must have been injected straight into Dermie's brain.

If he honestly thinks that, rather than saying it for controversy and media attention, then he's a massive knob-polisher.

It's interesting hearing Dermotts analogy for a good midfield. He talks about throwing guys in the centre square and seeing who gets it out.
The reality is, Hawthorn dont have a 1st possession player in the AFLs top 20. Carlton have 2 (Hodge is the leagues 86th best player on average 1st clearances)
Hawthorn have 2 players in the AFLs top 80 for clearances. Carlton have 5.
Carlton are top 2 and top 4 for clearances as a team and first possessions respectively. Hawthorn are average.

Reality and statistics mean more than uninformed opinion.

He said Hawthorn have 6 A graders:

Hodge
Sewell
Mitchell
Bateman
Burgoyne
Rioli

Carlton on the other hand have three

Judd
Murphy
Gibbs

Rates everyone else as B graders or below including Scotland & Simpson

That`s an interesting read as Derm said it was just a simple fact (Hawks midfield better) to support his argument.
He drinks his own bath water.

Hodge: A grade midfielder or a half back flanker that pinch hits in the middle? you be the judge...

Sewell and Bateman A graders?

Dermie claimed that Dustin Martin won't get any better earlier this year and the Richmond fans let him know all about it. He also said a few weeks back that Collingwood only fear Hawthorn and Adelaide... Dermie is great for a laugh.

If he did say that, yep, Dermie has lost the plot.

Dermie reckons Dustin Martin won't be an A grader cos his ass is too fat :sly:

It's natural to give premiership players a higher rating, and certainly dawk fans smugly believe they have the best 6-8 players in the comp!!

The stats quoted by BV are very comforting and indicative of reality v supposed potential.
