If results goes as expected we will finish in 5th position at the end of the home and away season anywhere between 2 and 2 and a half games behind WC (wooden spooner last season) in fourth....from a results perspective what would a pass mark be? IMO the comp has not been very strong this season and the quality really drops away after us on the ladder....is the one finals win against a rabble team such as Sydney, Scum, Freo, North etc enough?

You would think the pass mark has to be the last four....thoughts?....

Grand Final

Must win one final and be right in the picture for the second. Anything less would be disappointing.
As always injuries, or lack there of, will be critical.

The passmark would be winning a final, but I think we're capable of getting into a prelim. From there, it's a two-horse race to get into the Grand Final, so anything can happen.

What interests me is lets say Ratts meets expectations and wins a final....whats the contract offer? Could you even simplify it to one final win = a one year deal? Two finals = two years?

What if he doesn't win a final, do we resurrect the sakc Ratts thread?

We may not have beaten anyone above us but we're so far in front of those below us that a loss in week one would be disastrous...

We lose the first final and we join 3 other teams on the lookout for a new coach but I'm sure we will win that final because we will be playing a rabble of a team no matter who it ends up being....but a pass mark IMO has got to be a prelim....if we won one final Ratts may get one more year to get us to top four....but should not get more unless we we progress further....just reckon the standard this season has been poor....

Gut feeling is that if we get rolled by 8th, they won't renew. Which would be a terrible kneejerk decision.

We win our first and get done in Perth, I reckon a one year deal awaits.

Thing is with top 4 next year is that there's not a lot of downside in the four teams above us.

Eagles should improve.
Hawthorn will improve with a few players back from injury.

Geelong won't improve, but will they lose that much? Milburn and Mooney will retire but have effectively been phased out. Less than 50/50 on Wocjinski/Hunt retiring.

Collingwood would need a lot of bad luck. They win the flag, I assume Tarrant goes, maybe Davis as well. Not a lot of squad depth, but to slide to fifth?

Not a lot of upside for us in the way of natural development, no major list changes I would assume either..

Pass mark is win at least one final and Ratts gets a 2 year extension (1 year coaching contracts don't make sense). In any other year, 14 or 15 wins gets you top 4, so we will be stiff this year. We have improved as a team, but at least one finals win can only vindicate our real improvement.

A finals exit after week one (ala last 2 years) will have Ratts in trouble.

Double edged sword, i'm afraid.

I'm with you, i get the feeling that if we do get knocked out in the first week of the finals then Ratten is in trouble.
You have to wonder if our improvement this year has been totally Ratten's doing or the fact that Richardson and/or Brown have come to the club. With 3 coaching vacancies currently up for grabs i selfishly hope that both Richardson and Brown stay.

If we win a final he will be right. We would want to at least put a up a good solid fight in the second final to feel totally safe though.

I think its best if we all get behind the coaches and team from here on in. We dont want to get in the situation where it is a circus going into the first final. Won't help the team or chances.

As a club united we can achieve a lot more.

Yeah, way to take that out of context.

My point was that achieving the top four next season isn't a foregone conclusion, and moreso at this stage, a case of teams dropping out of it, rather than teams forcing their way in.

Unlike Hawthorn who have Roughead and Stratton back next year, we have no real x-factor to say "because of this we'll be top four next year".

Eagles are a couple of injuries and a proper fixture away from bottom 8.....

The pass mark is whatever Leading Teams determine it to be. In reality, it's not a number - like finishing 5th...or winning a final.

My real question is whether Ray McLean reports independently to the board. Ray has spent more time with us than just about any other footy club and/or business. His monitoring of Brett Ratten is fascinating. Ratten's adherence to McLean in providing leadership and team alignment is equally as fascinating. It's worth remembering that the ones who found success rave about Leading Teams. Those who didn't - don't. Worth noting too that our current leadership group think very highly of the program and their path on it. Particularly Judd and Jamison.

It's taken a while to get the honesty and accountability. Here's hoping the success isn't far away.

As a supporter who is realistic about this season, our strengths and our weaknesses, I feel that a pass mark is at a bare minimum, to win our home elimination final. If we then go to Subiaco, I would expect us to win, knowing our game style on a big paddock and gut feeling on both us and them in a few weeks' time. If we go down to them, I'd expect it to be tooth and nail, one player left on the bench, a melee at the end of every quarter and half the team still too sore to attend the B&F. Okay, maybe not that extreme, but if we lose I'd expect we go down fighting til the end. I don't think we'll lose to WC however, and anything from there is bonus and then some. If we face Geelong, it's a 50/50 in my eyes and again, I'd have a funny feeling we could do it. If not, great end to the season, much promise for 2012.

To lose a home elimination final against Sydney, Essendon*, North Melbourne or St Kilda is unacceptable. Something incredibly bad would have to happen during the game that made Essendon*'s bravery look like a man versus a mouse to accept that.

Ratten will get a 2 year contract, I can't see it being any more but certainly won't be any less. To give him a 1 year contract given the improvements on and off the field and the glowing praise from players would create uncertainty and confusion between board, coach and players. We don't need any inner conflicts.

Is it finals yet?????????
