I am happy to finish fifth! If we finish fourth we will play the first placed team and then we may really need that second chance. Finishing fifth has us playing a home final against whoever scraps into eight position, a win in the first week of the finals would do wonders for our confidents then who knows. I agree to actually win the flag a top four finish is a must, but is that what we are actually about this year???

we should be about winning flags every year.

Fifth will see us play one of St Kilda, Essendon*, Melbourne...

A loss to any of them would be devastating... a win will see us travel to Perth in week 2

Yes.. top 4 is an advantage

Definitely. Just making up the numbers in finals should not be an option. Our premiership window is open now. There have not been many teams that have won the premiership without the double chance in September. I actually believe on our day we could give it a real shake. However, from fifth I can't see us doing it.

I reckon our players realistically have the belief that they can beat anyone on their day so I'm sure they'd love to finish 4th or better and give themselves an opportunity to go straight through to the prelim.

I don't want to play the Saints anywhere PLUS if you finish top 4 you get to play ONE REALLY BIG FINAL straight away to find out what you are about.

from 4th and at full strength we will give collingwood a big shock and send them to a cut throat semi final

Or get done and meet them in the Granny.

Good scenario either way.

4th is definitely an advantage.
however, looking the the run home, very difficult to see us making it.
i'd predict Ess or Freo as our opponents......and heaven forbid it be the bummers.

I presume if we play Freo here it will be at Shityhad Stadium :banghead:

We really need Norf to roll the hawks next week, that's our only chance, I can't see the Weagles
dropping another game, they have the softest run home ever!

However, it wouldn't bother me finishing 5th especially if the Weagles can leap frog the Dawks & finish 3rd, that then means we will play all of our finals in Melbourne & hopefully at the G, but the Weagles need to make up some big % on the Dawks!!!

Go Norf....& Blues must put Melbourne's season beyond doubt!

Are you for real. How badly does a team need to lose before you'd say their season is beyond doubt. I reckon they just put their decade beyond doubt!!!

Would be doubtfull if Norf could beat the Dawks in Launceston

Too many variables.

What if we finish top 4 and go out in straight sets? Not much of an advantage then.

If we finish 5th and play an interstate team it may still be at the MCG depending on who finishes 6th and who they play. If St Kilda finish 6th they may prefer to play at Etihad.

West Coast may prefer to finish 5th and have a home final straight away.

I would love the ladder to finish as it is now. Geelong vs Carlton, Collingwood v Hawthorn, WC v Freo, Sydney v St Kilda. AFL would be happy with that - four big drawing clubs in the top 4, two finals interstate including another WA derby.

I reckon we will finish 5th and play Freo or Sydney or someone at the G. We will have loaded up on training in the last 3 weeks of the season and tapered beautifully to be in peak fitness for the first week of the finals. We will smash whoever we play providing its not the saints who it wont be. They are the only team in the 8 that use the flood and counter tactic that we hate.
From there we will play WC and chin them. Then play off in a big prelim that if all goes right we are a chance.

....either that or we bust a nut trying to make top 4. Possible make it but be physically and mentally exhausted and cop a spanking first week and then struggle the week after where if all goes right we may just be a chance.

I say we just focus on getting our game in order and making sure we are fit as fiddles for the finals.

Yes.. top 4 is an advantage

this

unfortunately this is the most likely scenario. A trip west will ruin finals chances whether we win it or not. We would most likely come back to face Geelong who will have had a weeks rest for the prelim

Have no-one to blame but ourselves. the draw against Essendon*. the missed opportunity against geelong. the woeful display against the bulldogs.

we now have to rely on other results and things just keep going against us. more to the point west coast just keep finding ways to win.

Officially, but you'd be bloody stupid if you thought it a reality, especially list wise.

I know stats are not the answer, but.

From 114 G/F's.
Wins from ladder positions are:
1st... 64
2nd... 32
3rd... 10
4th... 6
5th... 2

Carlton are the only team to get to the G/F from 6th Posn. 1999

How come no one factors in West Coast winning their first final?..in which case..we'd play our 2nd home final in Melbourne as well...yes?

That's if we aren't already in Top 4 of course.
