Don't know about this thread having legs, but it's come up a couple of times in general discussion so what the heck ...

When is a player automatically selected just because they become available? What does it depend on?

Obviously how good the player is and how long they've been out. Top shelfers like Judd would probably be straight back in the team almost regardless of how long he was out. Similarly any regular starter who gets a week from the tribunal can probably expect to come straight back in.

But what about the in betweens? See prior to the W.C. F.U. I wouldn't have brought Waite straight back. Reasoning is a) he'd been injured not suspended, so his fitness/touch would've dropped away at least somewhat, b) we were winning comfortably, c) I like to show faith in the incumbents and d) I think Waite's in our best 22, but only when in form. Now that we've lost one and in that one game struggled to takes marks in the forward 50 I'm keen to bring him straight back in. Not all that logical really when you consider that we'd been doing ok in all the previous games without him.

So what am I saying? Don't know really, just reflecting on how much difference just one loss can make -- and it shouldn't really. Reading the posts here, I'm not the only one. Many posters want to change five or more players with a large percentage of those returning from injury, (Duigan, Laidler, Waite, Robinson, O'Halpin). Are we really that desperate after just one loss? Surely not.
