A fun read and one which clarifies something that's been bugging me.

You see, I've been happy lately - for no good reason. Exams have finished but I don't think that's the reason for my jolly mood. Pretty sure I bummed out in them anyway.

Nope, I think the Blues are making me happy. You know what I mean? That veneer of peace, optimism, rightness in the world?

I got it.

If I wasn't coughing up muck and blowing green honey out my nose I might be inclined to strut a bit...

That was a fun read.

Always love a positive spin.
Always love the banter with the opposition.

I thought I had the Carlton swagger...I've had it since 1968.

Now all we have to educate some of our younger fans that it's the opposition we are here to boo, not our own.
Maybe its their parents we have to ask to set a good example of how to barrack for Carlton.

Growing up through the 70's and 80's was a great time.

When you look back on the past decade, I wonder if the feeling amongst Carlton fans was the same as the 1920's and early 30's or the 1950's. I wonder if supoorters during those eras felt the same. The feeling that not having success was "uncarlton"

I see it in my kids now. It must be bred into all Carlton supporters. That feeling that you deserve success - always.

Its not just about loving the club. Its the power the club has over you. The history, the colour and might of the jumper, the logo. Its engrained in you.

Its about quotes that only Carlton people can say:

"we're Carlton %$&# the rest"
"Footscray...a tragic club"
"they know we're coming"

Even now, living in Adelaide, the power of Carlton follows you. Walking the CBD and seeing a Carlton scarfe on a stranger, you walk past with a clenched fist and say in that tone that only we Carlton people know......"go blues"...... and you just feel that pride ooze out and you know that "Carlton Stranger" feels the same way. Its a mighty feeling to have!

I dunno Laguna..
Surely you earn success...you don't deserve it..unless you happen to be in a monarchy or something...and that is still unfair.

putting down a club like Footscray...if we did..back then...well that fills me with shame...not pride.
Do we need to be unprincipled bullies to be back in town?
Good grief, I hope we have changed that Elliotesque culture and moved on now.
I'm proud of the clubs improvement, on and off the field.
Part of that pride is the work ethic and team spirit of the players, and coaching staff...and part is the absence at the moment of embarrassing, morally corrupt people being the spokespersons for our club.
Apologies if i've taken what you wrote in the wrong way.

It's a good read. The only real issue I have with it is that at one point, the article states:
Quote:
The sanctions that sent the Blues plummeting to the bottom of the ladder resulted in a collection of wooden spoons and hence a raft of number one draft picks.

We collected our first spoon in 2002, the year we were punished so heavily.

Yes, it's journalistic fudging, but we were well on the decline prior to the 2002 cap penalties, so to claim it was the penalties which resulted in our resurgence is a bit disingenuous.

I don't like that article at all.
Not a bit.
I think there should be A LAW punishable by hard jail time, for anyone who writes about us and the salary cap breach, and doen't mention all the other clubs that were cheating at the time.
especially, and in particular Essendon*.
:thanks:

Whilst I did enjoy the article, the parts you dislike I feel the same way.

There should have been some mention of it in a different light...." that despite it common knowledge players were receiving payments on the side at all clubs and had been for generations from club patrons, Carlton was next team to be caught breaching the salary cap after Essendon*, but Carlton's penalty of about $1M fine and loss years of draft picks was unprecedented. Unbeknown to the AFL at the time, the severity of the penalties were so cruel they condemned Carlton to a decade at the bottom of the ladder with a huge debt.

I like the fact the article mentions how we as fans know that because we are Carlton we will be successful. I feel like that, I knew we would bounce back in the 2000s and that it would take time. Also not just because we are Carlton but its the way the AFL works in its current socialist guise, when you go down you are given every chance to come back up.

Also how people are saying in hindsight about our punishments making us stronger long term, no one said that in 2002 did they? Mind you at the time no club had bottomed out and come roaring up to the top of the ladder (St Kilda, Hawthorn have done that since), also the AFL didn't know our financial state was as bad as it was, so its unlikely the punishment would of been as harsh if it was.

Put it this way, would the AFL punish the Bulldogs or North to the extent we were? I think we all know the answer to that.

He nailed we supporters beautifully

Arrogrant, cocky, smart arse................. well actually that sounds exactly like me.

No problem with the article at all. And he is right, barracking for Carlton is something no other football follower can begin to understand

Magniifcent article and true in so many ways!
The attached however needs to be advertised somewhere within our halls!

Quote:
The thing about Carlton is that when they are a good side, they know they are good and that is what makes them so dangerous. Like no other club in the competition, and yes, even Collingwood, the Blues have a holier than thou attitude that permeates through the wider football community, threatening to terrorise all those who stand in their way. All successful organisations have it and it’s a quality several other clubs would do well to emulate.
