Just had a flying trip back to Tassie for a family reunion over the weeknd and was talking with a friend of my son's who runs an East Coast convention centre. We were at his place and I noticed a couple of photos of Tiger - one in particular of a great mark he took in either the '68 or '70 Grand Final. I asked how come he had the photos up and he mentioned he was a friend of Tigers. As some of you might know he has Menier's Disease which is very debilitating. From all accounts he has managed to get on top of it through diet and managing his stress levels. He is doing some relief teaching at private schools in Hobart and doing very well which is great news. Crossie remains my all time favourite Carlton player and the reason I barrack for the Blues. |

There are two players who i would have loved to see in their prime and they were Jezza and Crosswell. I only remember Jezza in his final year at the Blues and Tiger in a Nth and later Melb guernsey. Gee he could take a mark, I downloaded quite a few pics onto the Blueseum site - he would have been awesome to watch in the flesh. Here is a link to his Image Gallery on BZM http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-browse_gal ... lleryId=43 |

Saw his first game for Carlton, and loved him ever since. Could do anything! Four things off the top of my head that stand out: 1. Kicked 4 goals in the last quarter against Hawthorn (in Carlton's 12 goal qtr) FROM THE WING!!! Round 2 1969 - I was there! 2. Starred in the 1970 GF, and was probably our best player for four quarters (along with Swan McKay). (I was there too). 3. I can't remember when it was - must've been 1971. He was sick most of the year, but he came back for our last or 2nd-last game against Collingwood. They played him at FF and he kicked 8 goals and took a speccie where he was horizontal OVER a pack. I wasn't there for some reason but remember that mark being replayed on TV. 4. Some time in the late 70s, I was at the Heatley Stand end, he was playing for Norf, and Ian Robinson paid a free kick against him. Tiger seemed to go ballistic and ran towards Robinson who started running backwards. Tiger was waving his arms and yelling at him, and the crowd went into a frenzy, booing and yelling. I worked with Ian Robinson at the time, and asked him on Monday what Tiger had said. It went something like this "run backwards Ian, and I'll keep waving my arms and pretend that I'm yelling at you - the crowd loves it and they'll go nuts!" CLASSIC!! ** Edit. I didn't want to change my recollections, because I love 'em just the way they are ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() I wasn't born when he left Carlton but I remember reading his articles in the Age probably in the late 80s. Class. Witty and insightful, clever but not pretentious like Lane or Baum. Missed his writing when his illness forced him to stop. |

Not sure if correct, but i got a laugh out of it!!! |

He always called people Tiger..........true. I recall that he was almost engaged...if not married to Bob Ansett's daughter, when he played for us. |

Here's a copy of a post I put up in ''Warby's Scrapbook'' on Feb.8-2007. ''I've got vague memories as a kid of us playing South Melbourne at the Lakeside Oval. In his early days; Tiger played in the centre....6'1", fast, and a great mark. We were getting done; and Tiger told Barassi at 3/4 time that if he could play at Full Forward and they kicked the ball down there to him.....they could win the game. Barassi loved Tigers confidence and did that.....it was unbelievable.....Tiger started taking screamers and kicking goals; and the game was all over... ..South were demoralised after leading all day. Tiger was capable of anything once he turned his mind to it. I remember too that he had a polio type condition at one stage.. ..he used to come into training on crutches for quite a long time. Of course, tragically, he now suffers from Menieres Disease, and lives once again in Tasmania.....AFAIK; he still plays internet chess with Ronald Dale Barassi'' (From 2007) |

I asked an old timer who saw his career start and finish with the Blues through to Nth & the Dees which current footballer(s) remind you of Crosswell He said none, but the closest would be the verstaility of an Archer to play both ends, the flamboyance of a Hird through the midfield and Kouta to turn the game on its head, he said off the field he would put Sammy Newman to shame ![]() |

Here's another post I put up in Feb.-2007 about Tiger. We recruited Brent Crosswell from Campbelltown; Tasmania in 1967 as a 17 year old.....Born: 08/08/1950; 185cms and 80.5kg. 98 games and 92 goals....1968-75. His first season with us was 1968, when he won our Best New Player Award. Brent was very quick, elusive, fiery and flamboyant; and immensely talented. He had many disagreements with Coach Ron Barassi, which seemed to fire him up to play even better....it's been said that he didn't like small crowds and unimportant matches.....he needed the challenge of a big game. He played in the centre in our Premiership side of 1968....his first year; and IMO was Best on the Ground in our Flag winning 1970 side. The restless Tiger followed Barass to North in 1975, and played in their Flag sides of 1975 and 1977. He was the kind of player who brought people to the footy just to see him play.....as long as he was "switched on".....he was unbeatable. He had the ability, like Ablett and Jesaulenko and Carey and Hird, of being able to just take over a game singlehandedly with sheer audacious ability. |

My Dad's favourite player because he was brilliant, a bit nuts and a Tasmanian. I think he knew him socially, but I'm not sure. |

Thanks Taff that's so good to hear. I was honoured to have the great man as both my history teacher and footy coach in year 11 & 12, he even taught us the classic crossie 'don't argue' shove to the chest, or as he liked to call it the 'voom' (had Al Clarkson for a P.E teacher same year!) and always wonder how he's getting along with such an awful ailment so thanks for the update |
