Just reflecting on the varied fortunes of Andrew Walker & Robbie Warnock over the last 2 games got me thinking about these kinds of finishes I can recall (since I started following footy in 1983). Games that hung on set shots for goal in the dying stages, or after the siren. Apols if I've forgotten any, go ahead & add if so.

1984, vs Collingwood at Waverley - Warren Ralph kicks a point after the siren, lost by 5 points. Blues fans at the ground swear it was a goal.

1987, vs Nth Melb at Waverley - Sticks kicks his 6th after the siren to win by 4 points & give us top spot.

1989, vs Brisbane at PP - Capper goals in the last minute, lost by 3 points & cost Wallsy his job.

1991, vs WCE at PP - Simon Minton Connell goals in the dying stages at the Heatley Stand end, won by 3 points in a massive upset.

1992, vs Richmond at Waverley - Jon Dorotich missed a set shot from a close range, lost by 3 points.

1993, vs Essendon* at MCG - Sticks plays a great game but misses everything after the siren. Draw.

1993, vs Hawthorn at PP - The week after the Essendon* draw, Sticks bombs a goal to the Heatley end in the last minute. Won by 2 points.

1993, vs Sydney at PP - Final round, almost a massive upset but Rohan Welsh got a free & kicked a behind to give us a 1 point win.

2001, vs Hawthorn at MCG - Ben Dixon kicked truly after the siren to take the game by 3 points.

2002, vs Geelong at Etihad - Simon Wiggins' fingers are still stinging from Riccardi's kick after the siren that won Geelong the game by 4 points.

2004, vs Adelaide at AAMI - Fev kicked 7 including a late matchwinner from 50 to give us a 4 point win.

2009, vs Hawthorn at MCG - Fev again, this time hit the post to finish a titanic struggle with a 4 point loss.

2011, vs St Kilda at Etihad - Andrew Walker slotted a pressure goal from an angle at the death to give us a 3 point win.

2011, vs Geelong at Etihad - A groggy Robert Warnock misses from close in. 2 point loss.

You forgot Malcolm Blight in 1976 at Princes Park - kicks what Lou Richards said was an a 80 metre torpedo punt after the siren to win North Melbourne the game - it was barely 55 metres but I was still felt like shit afterwards.

In CK's defence, he did say since 1983.

As for Lou, I think anything over 35m was described as a loooong kick.

My Princes Park- Optus Oval print states that Blight's kick was later measured to have been 82m!!!!!

I think there was one against Port in there somewhere around the Hawthorn and Geelong games in the early 2000's. If memory serves me correctly the man was one of the Burgoynes kicking a goal after the siren to steal it from us.

He kicks it from a few metres in front of the point of the centre square - in those days Princes Park was actually shorter than it is now - it was extended by 10 metres when they built the Legends Stand - the kick probably went 10 metres back over the fence - I would give it 60 metres tops.

Unfortunately it does.

1981 vs Essendon* at Princes Park. We were about 3 goals up at the 27 minute mark. Fitzy was pinged for time wasting, and Neale Daniher kicked 3 goals to win it for the Dons.

We couldn't beat them at all in 1981 and 1982. (Last laugh, but! We won the flag both years and they were still shit).

Yep, I was at that game. Wasn't happy.

The Ben Dixon and Peter Riccardi goals still bite.

I blame Jordan Doering for the Hawthorn loss.

Riccardi's shot was touched, but we were only ahead thanks to a Lappin dive and free kick.

Ah, memories...

Good list that

I think you could add a game against Nth in 1979 when Glendinning booted a bomb from CHF at the scoreboard end to win the game by about 4 points.

A couple of Nth games that didnt include set shots were Gleesons goal on the siren in 1988 and Dwyers snap around 1984 which gave them teh game by a kick.

You are quite right, nikki.

IIRC Stephen O’Reilly tapped beautifully to a Port player who passed to Burguoyne.

The wikipedia list has us losing six times after the siren, the most of any club.

And I have been to all of them except the Port Adelaide one  .

I still say that Malcolm Blight's kick was only 60 metres tops.

2004 Round 3 V Kangaroos at the MCG.

Carlton leads by 1 point with a minute to go, the ball goes out on the full off the back of Houlihan's boot (very bad luck), Wells takes the kick from 50m out and slots it. Roos by 5.

I was at many of those games, including the Warren Ralph one-yes, i thought it was a goal.
The Blight one i will never forget, i was sitting on the wing on the city side of the ground and had a perfect view of it sailing through.
It was one the biggest kicks i have seen.
The Wiggins "touch" was a tough one to watch, we had come from about 7 goals down to hit the front only to have that kick break our hearts.
The '99 prelim also came down to a late kick for goal, while not after the siren. Essendon* had the ball in their forward line and i think it was Merceri who missed and it was a point. The kick in ended up coming back into the Essendon* forward half and Fraser Brown laid that wonderful tackle on Wallis and the rest is history.

I was standing in the VFL Members near the coaches box and I thought it was a goal as well - I nearly had a punch-on with my mate Gezza after that one with him being a feral Pies supporter. My older brother clip us across the back of the head and said grow-up and went home :banghead:
