Carlton’s All-Star Indigenous Team

With the AFL this round celebrating the fantastic achievements that Indigenous footballers have contributed to our great game, I have tried to compile a team that played with the Mighty Blues.

Alas I could only come up with 19 names, and not all of those have played senior football with the Blues. Fifteen of this team played senior football, another two of them played pre-season games, one reserves football and one U/19’s football.

The team would be strong through the midfield and have the ability to kick goals, but may leak a few down back. Most of these players were mids, so the team may seem a little skewed with the likes of Anderson and McGrath playing key-position down back. Are there any players that I have missed, or can you come up with a better balanced line-up than what I have listed????

B: Rod Waddell Joey Anderson Norm Le Brun

HB: Chris Yarran Corey McGrath Clinton Benjamin

C: Sean Charles Ed Curnow Troy Bond

HF: Syd Jackson (c) Alan Thorpe Jeffery Garlett

F: Eddie Betts Andrew Walker Ezra Bray

R: Alf Egan Justin Murphy Mark Naley

I: Willie Pepper

You'd probably play Walker at CHB.

Mark Naley....really?

Naley didn't find out until recently that his paternal grandfather was aboriginal (as well as a Gallipoli veteran), he grew up thinking that he was from Afghanistan!!

I think if it was a game, you would just rather not name a team than suggest players such Charles and Bray were deserving of being named in an "all star" team.

I was just trying to compile an indigenous team for the Blues and I only know of 17 players, there will be more I'd imagine

I even put in Willie Pepper who only played U/19's footy for the Blues in the mid-80's to try and get a starting 18

If the Blues had of drafted Sam Sheldon, the son of Ken Sheldon under the father-son like they tried, he would have been in this side as his mum is indigenous.

And if the Blues hadn't insulted Pastor Sir Douglas Nicholls KCVO OBE (the trainers refused to rub down an indigenous person) we'd have a starting 18 - and a positive rather than dreadfully negative association with a true Australian legend.

Every club has a skeleton or two in their closest, and this is one of our worst - if not the worst.

Nah, I'd say the club cheating their way to 16 premierships and eventually a 17th is by far the worst.

You missed Ed Curnow...

Good work Bomba - nice effort to put that together.

Dont suppose there is anyway of establishing whether this is more or less successful (or higher recruiting rate) than other Clubs?

ps Good find on Curnow - Id been thinking that myself, in an ashamedly racist way.
