Thinking about something BlueMark wrote in another thread. How come I am not enjoying the season when we've won 3, lost 1 and drew another?

for me its the structures.

I have no doubt our boys are stronger, run harder... look hungry to win each contest. I think we have taken a big step closer to being a powerful side. We can compete with men now.

But the structure shits me no end

and being a fan I want immediate results...the quick fix... because I can see the midfield is flying.

maybe though

there is no alternative to Hampson at this stage. Maybe Warnock needs Hampson because he hasn't got the miles in his legs yet (after the past leg injuries) to ruck all day without much of a chop out. Maybe he needs a couple more seasons in those legs before we ask that of him, maybe he'd just break down again if we pushed him too hard because Hampson, while rucking well, is not an option down forward.

Maybe there is no alternative to Laidler and White as the two supporting talls to Jammo even though they lack height - though not heart.

Maybe Bower Setanta Hendo and Kruise all injured or coming back from injury rob the selectors of choice.

Maybe Watto shouldn't be asked to step up and play second tall to Jammo

and so maybe it is better to have Laidler and White covering the second/third talls cos they have miles in their legs

Maybe without Hendo or another marking option our delivery is faulty because their backs can swamp us

maybe we need to see it another way

we are winning without our proper structure

maybe if we had Bower we'd have Watto maybe we wouldn't need Watto and he could get the miles and the knowledge he needs in the bullants

maybe if we had Hendo we'd have more accuracy in front of goals because players would have faith in Hendo and Waite to mark it, or to bring it to ground and having the two talls would force the defense to take risks if they zone off and give our mids more choices, less pressure as they bring the ball in

maybe the mids have yet to adapt to the extra running they are doing and are [REDACTED] as they bring the ball in

maybe if we can get to the halfway mark entrenched in the 8 and slowly bring the structure up to what we want maybe the second half will see our form grow

maybe the club is doing very well working ways around the structural problems

maybe this is the year our mids become elite

and then we'll add the talls we need, Watto and others that need time

maybe when Kruise is fit and Hendo has his touch back and Bower is fit and Setanta is fit we'll have options again

maybe I'm just making excuses

maybe

but I was happy we won because we showed guts

even though we were undermanned down back

even though we kicked atrociously

and were 11 points down

we won because

despite all the injuries/form losses etc

we are learning to win ugly again

maybe that's a good thing

and maybe AJ was the right sub, he kept our run up in that last and we needed that
maybe another tall and we would have lost that run

maybe for the mids to realize its not about having talls dominating
or backs covering

its about them running
and running

both ways

that wins more often than not

and maybe this is a great step for us

and will allow the coaches to work on the other structures that we need to build

around a midfield that dominates

maybe

and maybe I haven't got a @#$%&! clue.

with the defence it's quite funny that 6 weeks ago we had so many options down there we didn't know where to put them- now in the space of 5 weeks we are struggling

Watson- not ready
Mccarthy - not ready
Ohalpin- injured not ready
Thornton - on the outer
Austin- injured again
Bower - injured again
Armfield - struggling to find form
yarren been good- now injured
Waite - needed forward
Hendo - struggling needed forward
Walker- now a forward

What I cant understand is when we have talls causing us trouble why the ruckman doesnt drift down and sit in the hole- like they used to do- It's not as if they are doing much around the ground in providing an option

maybe I don't know anything either

maybe the coaching panel have bitten the bullet, settled on a plan and it's just a matter of keeping the faith, even if some of our weaknesess are exposed.

I certainly feel we are playing better footy, I still have concerns over some of the selections (or non selections) but that maybe a case of the MC needing to see what players have got.

Maybe some players are still getting their head around it (B Gibbs I'm looking at you)?

maybe we are doing enough at the moment - ie only lost to Collingwood

maybe its a good thing that nobody rates us (including our own)

maybe we beat sydney this week - no maybe's about the likely hood of it being an ugly game

maybe we'll be sitting ugly on 4.5 wins from 6?

maybe, just maybe

Its just plain bad luck that most of our long term injuries over Pre Season and the start of the season proper in 2011 hae been to key position players. Setanta, Bower, Hendo, Austin, Mitchell and Casboult and of course Kreuzer have all copped it and are now either still out injured or terribly underdone due to extended periods out...
We should have most of these guys in form and in action by the mid way point of the season, so
maybe that ll be a massive improvment to our structure and assist our run into the finals, rather then have us fall away as the season went on like we did last year.

- As stated earlier, maybe we are learning to win ugly again. I have no dought that the Carlton of seasons past would ve dropped the last two games.

- Maybe the fact that we were able to show some resolve and win on Saturday night will give us the confidence to beleive that we can beat the Swans this Friday

- Maybe if we win our next two games and are 5.5 wins from7 games, the AFL world will show us some respect...

OK so if the Ruckman is filling the hole in defence and with the game having more stoppages now than ever before, who follows the ball round the ground to do the supple ruckwork? You can't have it both ways. I like our backline at the moment. If Watto grows into a machine that can handle the big forwards, I think we are looking really good down back.

Our Forward line is the biggest maybe baby at the moment. Suggestions for improvement???

Factor in Casboult and Mitchell being injured, our overall luck with key talls is atrocious.

Adelaide exposed us for height down back.

For 2011 I think Hendo is our man to play CHB. He is struggling at the moment. Remember he is still so young. We expect players these days to be superstars from the word go.

At CHB he can follow the CHF champs to the footy and learn to be a future CHF. Whilst he fills this role, Watson gets a chance to develop in the 2's or by picking up the 3rd forward. Remember Kouta spending 1998 at CHB...

The rest of our defense has been good this year.

When the Big K comes back, he plays ruck / forward. He'll do this better than Hampson. He beecomes the liong target up forward whilst Waite, Walker, Eddie and Garlett do their stuff.

Good point Hunter.
And let's not forget Hoops coming back..who can be helpful forward and back.

i haven't been disappointed at all this year.
Quietly excited for what the season might bring.
Winning ugly, or even drawing til we get a few main players back is just fine.

The main change I see is more of a cohesive team effort and spirit.
Not stars and others...but a bloody decent, unfolding blue hearted mob.
Our mob.

I agree with this post. Maybe we arent travelling so bad after all.

We are almost flying under the radar a little at present (if there is such a thing). Pies, Cats, Hawks seem to be everyones top 3 but after that all the talk is about Essendon*, Freo, Bulldogs, Saints and Swannies. For a team sitting outright 4th I'm happy to be the forgotten club.

We are not setting the world on fire but we have improved from 2010. The next 3 games are crucial (Swans, Saints, Cats). Win 2 of 3 and we are sitting pretty.

In the second half of the season we should have guys like Kruezer, Hendo, Bower at 100% and I think we can seriously finish top 4.

Very open season for mine. Don't think Pies are unbeatable. Their depth could be in question if they have 2 or 3 injuries.

Maybe after three years of playing in the backline with the game panning out in front of him B Gibbs is learning to be a 4 quarter midfielder again.

Maybe he should wear the green vest this week.

Hey cimm, do you have permission to use courageous when not discussing the Scum?

I think they've trademarked "Brave" .

Courageous is still pending.

I have seen improvement in our backline, I have seen improvement in our midfield with only Gibbs not really having a consistent impact this year.
The forward line for me is the big maybe. Maybe they are good but they have not been converting opportunities re: Richmond, Essendon* and Adelaide games or maybe I am kidding myself.
