im just curious how the father/son rule works

im sure we are all hoping that Dylan Buckley is number 1 draft pick material and we steal him with the f/s pick

however - say he is maybe worth pick 30s-40s how does it work - do we have to give up our first pick or do we wait until another club chooses him and then use our pick?

because we obviously dont want to give up our first pick on the chance we might miss out or is it just bad luck?

thanks if anyone can explain

In Dylan's case, as he's nominated that wants to play for us under the F/S rule, it's up to clubs who finish below us to bid for him if they want him.

- Eg. If Richmond say "we think he's worth our 2nd round pick" we have to either match the offer with our 2nd (which would be later in the draft) or let Richmond take him. Richmond would then have to take him.

The club already has Dylan Buckley.

The club will use a first round draft pick if necessary, no other club can outbid Carlton if that is the case.

I think the op is asking if we have to give up our 1st round pick for him regardless?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father-Son_Rule
Quote:
* 1. Individual clubs are free to nominate potential father-son recruits within the above eligibility guidelines.
* 2. A meeting is held on the Monday before the start of trade week where clubs can bid for the nominated players. Each club has the option to bid, in reverse ladder order, for the nominated players.
* 3. If a bid is made, the club that nominated the father-son player must use its next available selection if it wishes to retain its hold on that player. If a club nominating the father-son player declines to match the selection nominated, the club with the successful bid must use that selection at the Draft to select the player.
* 4. Any club that makes a successful bid on a father-son selection must to the pick the player they nominate.
* 5. If no bid is made by another club, the club that nominated the father-son eligible player will forfeit its last selection in the draft to select the player.

They're the standard rules, is there any difference when we have guaranteed a player more than 1 year out from the draft?

Don't think so.

It's not unusual for a club to get into a father/son early.

Billy Stretch son of Stephen from Melbourne has already had contact from the Dees and they've told him they'll take him in 3/4 years when he's eligible as long as his progression continues on the same path that it is now.

The advantage of father/son is if the club can get involved at an early stage and help the "sons of" reach the club, then it's winners all round.

I can't seem to find anything written about it, but I believe the if the F/S eligible club declines, then the player goes into the draft pool, but come the winning bidder's offered pick, they must be selected.

And yes, it's the next pick, so using the 2010 ladder if we had a kid and Collingwood bid their first rounder, we'd use our 2nd rounder.

ahhh right thanks everyone

now would i be wrong in thinking a scumbag club like the bombers would put in an early bid knowing we would have to use a higher pick just to @#$%&! with us?

they'd have to take him with that bid, so they'd need to be sure they felt he was worth it.

Yes they could, but risk having to use this if the Blues didnt think he was worth that high a pick

GWS and Sheedy may be the club that may push us as they showed an interest in him, with them having quite a few early picks they could always risk one / take a gamble???

Wouldnt put it past Sheedy to try and ruffle our feathers again

I didn't think GWS can put a bid in and hence the reason we went early with Dylan so he is not one of the 17 year olds they could of got early.

You are right. GWS cannot bid for him. Wouldnt be fair as they have so many 1st round picks it puts them at an unfair advantage. He was in the age bracket that GWS could have signed up as a 17 yo. This is why Carlton got special permission from the AFL to be allowed to bid for him.
