Some dude in Tasmania found old footage from 1947 in his garage the other day and it shows parts of the 1947 where we beat Essendon* by a point, plus a host of star players from the day doing training drills. Is pretty cool.

Thing i noticed was that they had a strange kicking style, but damn they were accurate!

Yes.....I would say that over 85-90% were dropkicks/stabpasses.

It was the case at Carlton of course too till 1965, when new Coach Barassi virtually banned dropkicks; excepting people he trusted to dropkick like Southby and Ian Robertson, who was the best dropkick exponent I ever saw.

I agree that Robbo was the best exponent of the drop kick. Regularly dobbed them from what would now be inside the centre square.

Southby OTOH, arrived in Barassi's last year ('71) and predominantly kicked long punt kicks.

Yep, I have great memories of Southby seemingly marking in slow motion, going back, and then kicking to McKay or Robbo in the centre of the ground with a massive torp. What a team we had!!!!

Of course....... I'm mixing up my eras a bit.....Wes Lofts kicked out with dropkicks.

#12 would be Doug Williams who played as a winger/rover.

Perhaps some of this footage should be shown at training this week at Princes Park. Kicking straight and handballing to targets.
Quality old video though.
