Very sad news. John was interviewed earlier in the year on SEN by Geoff Poulter and it was such a great listen...hopefully it can be replayed. He had some great stories...including his woeful return from a half-forward flank in his first year when he kicked 8.43

RIP Johnny

My first footy jumper had Johnny James' No.10 on it.
A sad day for the James family and the Carlton family.

R.I.P John James

Used to wear his no. 10 on my CFC guernsey when I was a kid.

Was thrilled when he won the 1961 Brownlow

Very sad news......Johnny couldn't kick over a jam tin; but was an incredible mark for his size, and was Judd like in the way he could burst packs.....he could walk backwards out of packs; and they never woke to it.....a real champion in the truest sense....R.I.P.

Never saw him play (in fact I'd say very few on here did), but a club champion and Brownlow medallist so his contribution to our club goes without saying.

RIP, John James.

I certainly saw him play and he was a star.

A fantastic mark for his size, strong and determined. Unfortunately, a very poor kick.

Well remember (OK not well; I was only 9) his herculean efforts playing as a 5' 9" (IIRC) CHF in the 1962 finals.

Thanks, John, for your efforts for the Navy Blues.

R.I.P Johnny James.

One of our greatest.
I saw him play also, and was amazed at what he could do.
Ken Hunter was very similar to JJ with his marking for a relatively small bloke in the back line.

My first year at St Pat's Ballarat was the year he won his Brownlow.
His photo was on the wall outside the boarders' dining room near the 1952 football team. In the border of the photo was the score for one game:
SPC 52 -51
Ballarat High School 0-1
J. James 35 goals from CHF.

He was revered there and my mates from Robinvale subsequently bore the benefits of his coaching up in that small town.

Go well.

Very sad to hear of JJ's passing- I met him once in Robinvale when he was principal of the local Primary School. He asked me to be a goal umpire for a game between Mildura West & Robinvale and I dudded him out of a goal............sorry John!

Always sad to here of the passing of one of our own. John James was one of my first Carlton heroes.

I was 10 when he won his Brownlow in 1961 and we were just coming out of a very poor decade for the Club.

We were rather short on stars at the time ( Big Nick and a couple of others being the exception) so it wasn't hard to have the #10 as a favourite.

As others have suggested the comparison with Kennie Hunter is warranted particularly for his marking and courage.

It always amazed me that a bloke of around 5 foot 10 inches could be versatile enough to play in the spine and in particular CHF.

RIP JJ

my friends (family friends of his) arranged for him to text me on my 40th a couple of years ago.

A Carlton legend and although I never met him he apparently was a fantastic bloke.

The compliment in the Hun by the triple Brownlow medallist Skliton said it all.
When the ball went anywhere near his back pocket he always turned up out of nowhere and usually cleared the ball with a long kick to a target.
