That's admirable, but weren't the much lauded conditioning staff monitoring his training load closely, considering his history of injuries?
That's a pretty difficult thing to monitor when you've got more than one doctor giving the thumbs up and a player doing his 6th preseason saying he's feeling great. What they should have been more mindful of was that the player was coming to them from the Melbourne FC...a place hardly renowned for it's medical nor conditioning staff for some time.
What is noticeable to the trained eye is that the ankle injuries sustained have definitely caused some changes to the McLean running gait, so he's now got to be more mindful of injuries such as stress fracture, achilles pain or the dreaded plantar fasciitis. Once poor technique or biomechanical problems causes poor technique - it's hard to go back to doing it correctly. He'll need to keep up his physio sessions, ice up those legs and go in for more MRI scans. And for recovery...he should be on the underwater treadmill as often as possible.
