Reading the CFC item about Rookie upgrades and Garlett's minute frame had me thinking about "Skinny" Lappin and how he has become the natural replacement.

Lappin was one of my absolute favorites and with the body of a bowling pin was lucky to survive all those years on the field without getting murdered. Lappin's ability to take a contested mark, kick some great goals and generally read the play was fabulous.

Who can forget that goal against the Bombers... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAeV5MEZBFk

Maybe there's something about terrific, skinny, goal sneaks and their prowess against Essendon*... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBViyFsvTno

Lappin had a rather good career at the Blues. I wonder if Jeff will surpass him (he already seems to have more muscle than Matthew ever did).

Has there ever been a better stick thin player with terrific ability playing for the Blues - nay, AFL - than Lappin and (hopefully) Garlett?

Used to love the way Lappin would tear Essendon* a new one, particularly in the early 2000s. The later game in 2001, round 18 (Bradley's 350th) where he kicked 5 goals is one of my favourite Lappin games. The Bombers simply had no answer to him that day.

Was watching our recent game against Essendon* the other day, and Garlett was outstanding. Fantastic pick-up by the club to have him as a rookie. Full credit to Wayne Hughes on this one.

David Glascott has to get a mention in their somewhere. Always looked like a schoolboy out there amongst the men, but he was super courageous playing in an era where blokes like him were hit and hit hard. He never shirked once and put his head over the ball countless times. I'd have Glascott leading...Lappin was a really hard worker and kept his opponent so honest...Garlett is that special that he could overtake all of them...he has quite a tank on him and it's conceivable to think that he could one day collect the ball off half-back and run the length of the field to slot a goal.

Ken hunter was a bit of a stick. Taller than the others but very thin. If he counts, he'd be number 1 in my book. no more courageous player at Carlton.

Glascott for mine.

As for Lappin v Garlett . Lappin was a much more complete footballer and could do everything a guy his size could possibly do, even more sometimes. Trouble is he played in a side (and for a club) in decline .

Jeffy does far less stuff but I believe he'll be just as good, watching defenders try and find him after they take there eyes of him for .05 seconds, is now one of my favourite things?. I think he'll be part of the resurgence.

That story about Ellard and him and how hard they work is just what we need.

Cliff Stewart.

Another skinny one.

Glascott was a champion schoolboy high jumper IIR. Certainly helps if you want to take a hanger.

Most clubs will claim the same, but we've been blessed with some amazinglly courageous players.

Hunter, Alvin, Silvagni, Dean, Rice, Hogg, Glasscott as Doc says.

Personally, I always rate Hickmott a touch above as sometimes I think he knew what was about to hit him and embraced it.

The only difference I see is that Jeff has the potential to put some size on once he really starts hitting the weights, you could probably compare lappin with Dustin Fletcher in the fact that there body shapes hardly changed over the coarse of there careers... Hit the weights jeffy and start supplying some impact to those tackles......

Not going to happen. Will never get to 80kg and would be lucky to get to that. No need.

An opposition tough nut of the 80's (Brereton?) once said the hardest hit he ever received was from a bag of bones called Ken Hunter...
Inspirational stuff!

I beg to differ, after having played sports up in Darwin as a teennager, where we would play a season of afl and than followed by a season of rugby league... I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get selected in a institute of sports program for league and I can tell you I was Neva blessed with genes to put on weight, but the programs they put you on with the diets and weights exercises I gained 5kg in muscle over 4 months. And bear in mind the toll it took on our bodies running around in 32 degree heat. Aaron davey is an example of what you can achieve with plenty if hours in the gym.... His probably got bigger arms than most of the guys in our side.......

QFT. As Daivd Parkin once said it's amazing he didn't get killed more often! But if you want to talk Beanpoles it's got to be tall and skinny, and for mine the tallest/skinniest como I can recall at Carlton was Tony Bourke - 201cm and said to be 94kg but looked more like 84.

Garlett put on 4kg since last year, he can keep going, but u think about 77-80kg would be the max he would want to get to. Doing 4kg in a year is a good sign that he isn't genetically adverse to bulking up his upper body.
Simmo is the one who really struggles to get weight on, works hard to put on more than 1-2kg muscle a year in the off season.
Hoops was a stick insect that every year added significantly to become a decent sized unit.

Kenny Hunter is easily the best "skinny" player to play for the CFC.

Garlett's perfectly suited to the modern game with pace, balance, evasiveness and a quick thinker. If he tidies up his field kicking could he turn out to be an absolute gun.
Lappin was a freak. Could do the miraculous at times. Wonderful player for the blues.
