I believe Judd is a great captain and a great player. I think he won the Brownlow this year because a lot of times he was playing a lone hand. Swan didn't win the Brownlow because of the exact opposite. Too many other players stepping up to help the team but to ultimately rob him of his personal accolade. I'm sure Judd would prefer a premiership medallion around his neck rather than a brownlow.

My issue is not with Judd and his leadership, it is that we are relying too much on his leadership.... it is the leadership of the rest of the group that worries me. This year we needed to learn how to spread the load in attack without Fev. I believe we also need to learn how to spread the leadership across the group even with some short term pain.

We need to send a message to the rest of the team that Judd cannot be relied upon to carry our team both in performances and in leadership. Lets force this onto others and force them to take the step up by taking the captaincy off Judd and giving it to someone else. We will lose nothing with Judd not being our Captain. Judd will still be a leader and a great player whether he is Captain or not.

As to who this should be.. I am not sure. I really wish there was someone else in our team who was a natural leader who picks himself as our next captain. Maybe we can look at a rotation policy over next year or two or even within a year so we can determine who is our best leaders.

My current selections would be:

Kade Simpson (C)
Marc Murphy (VC)

and then not sure.. maybe Gibbs.

Would this be worth a shot? If so, who should be in our captain/vice-captains?

Change the thread title. You'll panic the masses and they'll charge. Judd will be Captain next year.

Sorry mate not going to happen.

Judd is our only captain. Leadership needs to be addressed i think Mclean has what it takes to become a leader by example but obviously has issues with his body.

Murph and Gibbs are not accountable enough to be leaders at this point.

You realise you can't have Judd as Captain without losing Kennedy.

+1

No competition.

I understand the concern on leadership spread. Simmo is a leader.

Players do not have to be captain to become Leaders.
Didn't we spend a truck load on that Leadership course...are they still around?
I'm not sure if they added any value tbh.

..Judd's growing as a captain, still our best option.. ..future captain, possibly Murph.. ..good darkhorse candidate is the krooz, has a real captain like presence out on the field..

Kennedy is gone and even if he stayed do you really think we wouldn't have given up pick 1? The crows just showed the whole football world that you can call Carlton's bluff.

Last year, I would have agreed with you 100%.

But now, not so much.

I think Judd really lifted he's leadership responsabilities this year and the sad part about that is, nobody bar maybe kade Simpson showed any sign of doing the same.

Hope others challenge him next year.

It's still a bit of pointer to where we are as a club when you can't consider anyone else being skipper apart from Juddy.

On field leadership is still an issue.

This thread shoud be titled "WHO HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A CAPTAIN IN MAYBE 5 YEARS"

Your simply saying that after judd carried this team all year and proving this by winning the brownlow and our best and fairest, he should have the captaincy taken off him...

TURN IT UP....

Tell me one player apart from judd, who we can rely on next year to be consistent enough to get us over the line each game....

Don't get me wrong, we have alot of young guys coming up who show leadership qualities, but they are nowhere near capable of handling the burden that judd does everyweek....

I think as Judd has matured his leadership qualities have grown into what we have now. Judd is now a leader of men and will remain Carlton captain for at least the next three years.

I heard Matt Rendall compare Griffen and Jacobs as very similar in terms of worth. We got a 2nd and 4th round pick for our bloke and they got a 4th round pick for their bloke. I just find it a bit contradictory that you are happy to have Judd lead the club but at the same time you think Carlton treated Kennedy harshly.

Yet you look at the premiers and I can't think of a single player who seems like a natural fit for captain, including their captain. The role in itself is overstated IMO.

There are a number of players who need to become leaders both on and off field before you could seriously consider anyone to replace Judd.

its sad, but in the good old days, people like sos, peter dean, earl spalding etc etc and many, many others, led the way without ever seriously considered to be captain for the mighty blues.
